KMS sold out

What about Dan's then? I always liked the guys at Dan's they let me take my spider apart when I needed new bushings and couldn't afford them to do the labor. If KMS is the new one maybe they will move out of town so its not so hard to get to the store.

Dan's now sells used cars.

I stopped in and talked to Marty at KMS last week Thursday, the new owners are the same that own Iron Mountain, and the one in Marquette. They are the new Polaris dealer also. I think they will be called Houghton Powersports?

Yah, that link I posted says that. I also heard a rumor that all those that worked there are gone? Someone told me that yesterday.

That sucks about Dan's. On the website for the new people it says volume seller, doesn't sound like they care about us, just moving inventory.

Not all,,,,,yet. I don't know if they (new owners) will make it long here. Could very well make it better for other shops in the area though!!!-Mezz

Checked with Chad. M&M hung on to AC & Yamaha so at least those products are not part of off trail superstore concept. I don't know if SS will work up there you have to work 24/7 when the snow flies can't take a number & wait 2 weeks for service.

So nice to see everyone supporting them. What's with the negative comments so quickly?

I'll give Chad a shot anyday. He runs a good shop. As far as the other, I ride AC so Chad's the man.

Chad sold me on Yamaha always took great care of me & my buddies even stocks other brand parts to keep everyone on the snow. M&M right there trail & water. Just can't ask for more than that from a dealer. Marty KMS has stong doo presence & 2011 800 etek should do well must have been a heck of an offer! Biz is biz sure they all did what was best for all involved.

Well this really is the way its going lately since the powersports OEM's starting structuring there dealer programs similar to the auto industry. A dealer needs marketshare and volume to make a profit. Polaris was one of the last OEM's to hang on to the business model of mom & pop single line shops, remember when the local Polaris dealer was in someones outbuilding? Now even they have switched gears after going with manufacturer direct distribution. Probably will see dealer groups take over, I think the recession slowed the process but it'll pick-up again on the rebound, were just lagging behind the rest of the country in this area. Hopefully it ends up with better dealership experience for the consumer but then again it will definately make room for the independent parts/service guy to make a living on the big shops oversights.

X2 Dan's. Great guy's. They helped me figure out and dial in my IQR 2 years ago when I first built it and was having some trouble. Pulled it in right away and figured it out. Simple fix - something I actually over looked.
Hopefully the new owers of KMS, Houghton Powersports or what ever their going to be called succeed.

My Rant...

I do not know about the other brands of sleds, but it's pretty rough when a SkiDoo rep. shows up at the dealership and demands that he buy in advance XXX many sleds. With this economy in the shape it's in one would think the dealers might need a little help with the financings. But corperation greed is the norm.end rant.

Marty may NOT be able to talk about anything until his legal muzzle is off. Sure not Marty's doing the big money calls the shots.

Thank you...

Well, today is my last day “helping” with the transition to new ownership, personally I am now going to go sit out and sit in the woods for awhile, maybe thru this coming winter, I refer to it as; “sitting around looking out the window while eating nuts n’ berries going hmmm…”

As everyone is obviously aware, Keweenaw Motor Sports has been sold, the new principles are Jordan and Sarah Wolfenberg of Iron Mountain, Marquette and now the new and improved Houghton Power Sports. HPS will sell and service BRP, Polaris and…check back for future additions, I’m not running the show anymore so who knows.

The reason behind the sale, as anyone who has ever been in business knows, everything is for sale and the Wolfenburg’s perceived a business opportunity so they “wrote the check”. Plain and simple, for me it had nothing to do with any of the manufactures (each dealership negotiates their own deals) I have nothing but good things to say with regards to BRP and Honda, and the relationship we had developed with them at KMS.

I didn’t think that it would be but it has been a very melancholy experience, letting my baby go. As far as the employees, this sounds harsh but as everyone knows, business is business, three of the seven remain.

Thank you to everyone who supported KMS over the course of my tenure these last five+ years. As a small group of employees we had truly become family to one another and many of our regular customers had become an extended part of that family, thank you from all of us we will miss seeing you.

Marty

P.S. Whitedust, as far as legal muzzles, that’s why I left Chicago to live in the Keweenaw, no legalities included with regard to me, learned valuable lessons years ago in ‘big city business” who knows where I’ll show or end up, lol. Plus I was only the “Grand Pooh-Bah” with the blood, sweat and tears, not the big money.
