Rootcellar is nice but the dude that runs the place is an *** at times. Good food though but don't try to eat at the bar....

I stayed at Walleye lodge last year and thought the accommodations were nice. No bar/restaurant but a couple nearby. Beds are top notch.

Was their by myself on a trip due to sled issues and they made me wait for a table wouldn't let eat at the bar

The looks people were giving me as I sat by myself eating while they waited for a table :cool3:

I will agree with this statement as well. We stayed at the Gogebic Lodge and it was perfect. We ate dinner at other places and ended the night at our cabin at the lodge, park the sleds walked to the bar for entertainment then we were able to just walk back to the cabin after. They also have gas and morning breakfast.

I Have not been there in 6 -7 years and do not plan on ever going back unless there is a change of ownership.

If you don't need fancy, The Timbers in Bergland has nice clean cabins, but older. Great location right in town and on the lake. Wherever you stay, be sure to eat at J.W.'s Bar and BBQ!

I've been at most of these so here's my (2) cents:

-Timbers-Worst night sleep ever on a 20 year old futon. Felt like stuffed with bowling balls. The bed was nice, if you go, make sure everyone has a bed, if you let your bussies use the pull out/futon, you will hear about it.-Located top of the lake, sort of near Bergland Bay Bar and Hoop.
-Walleye Lodge-Closer to Bergland Bay Bar, cleaner place, no complaints.
-Root Cellar-didn't have any issues with Rick, have heard plenty of stories though. His place is new and clean, plus good food/bar on property.
-Gogebic Lodge, Great bar, good food, staying in one of the cabins, can advise later on that after next week.

Depends on your budget. If you want nicer and don't need to be in walking distance to a bar/rest then I would look into renting a house/cabin. If you're on a budget, look into the 3 above. Any other questions, let us know.

I am surprised nobody said your "change of scenery" will also include lots of rough trails as grooming is sad. If you like smooth trails keep going north..
Also, if you don't know the lake you may want to stay off it except to cross (safety). I have been out there in the fog/snow storm and it can get scary.

Gogebic lodge is a great place to stay and the bar is great.....as long as the lake is rideable. Walleye lodge is a nice place to stay also. Won't go back to root celler, no need to spend money where I don't feel wanted. As for the trails, they have stated they are making a big effort to groom them better this year, we will have to wait and see. The trails were rough last weekend but it was early and plenty of swamps were wide open.
