Oh yah High Def signal is a must regardless of what you choose if you really want to maximize your viewing experience.

I am a Cheap A#$ and almost passed on the $10.00 a month cable bill increase to move up to HD service. I think I would Fricken FREAK OUT and hurt someone if I had to go back to simply watching Digital signal.

yes, if you have narrowed it down between LCD and LED, defintely go with LED. BTW, the latest generation of Plasmas are all 600hz. If you walk into a big box store, the LED and LCD are going to appear nicer because they are typically brighter and shine across the store...go to a specialized store (tyical viewing conditions) and you will see a difference between plasma and LCD/LED. The Samsung PNC8000YF models are absoutly amazing...I didn't think anything could surpass the Pioneer Kuro models from 2yrs ago, but it has happened.

Great thread. My 250lb. Wega just took a dump. Asked a guy at work who is always up on this stuff, says to go with the Samsung also. He told me go with the LCD, because the extra loot you will shell out doesn't make it worth it for the LED.
Don't know if that is true, but this guy seems to know his stuff.

If you go with LED/LCD go Samsung.

If you go with Plasma Panasonic has a slight edge over Samsung for performance. However, the Sammy has a slight edge over the Panny for looks.

with the Samsung LED series 7000/8000 you get 3D ready if you are interested in this. I bought two and both came with a free blu-ray player.

Not sure if LCD's are 3D or not. Something to check out.

Best Electronics - ratings

FWIW,
The December 2010 issue of Consumer Reports (cover story) includes ratings of 400+ products, including:
Electronics stores
LCD & PLasma TVs
3D TVs
Smart Phones
Computers
Tablet Computers
E-book readers
Printers
Cameras
Camcorders
Home theaters-in-a-box
Headphones
Blu-ray players
New Apple iPods
GPS navigators

[In my opinion, CU "ain't what she used to be", as I sometimes find some of their product "complaints" to be a bit petty, if not silly, and there are numerous other sources for reviews of hi-tech products, such as CNET and epinions.com, but the article is probably at least worth a read. -FRN]

I just went through this in the last month. I thought plasma was not going to be an option I'd want. Wrong!!

I ended up purchasing two 2010 Panasonic non-3D TV's.
TC-P54G25 & TC-P42S2. Prices were great w/ free shipping and no tax.
They have anti-glare coatings on the screen and on the perimeter around the screen. They also now have built in "burn-in" protection. The blacks are really deep. The 54" has wi-fi capability but mine is hard wired. There are some decent apps on the TV and with the addition of the PS3 there are even more. I received a free Skype camera with the purchase and have had a blast seeing/talking with my oldest son at college in Montana over the big screen. I'm also adding a couple of network cameras at the cabin so I can monitor the property from the big screen or my laptop. I swear we are getting close to being the Jetson's with all the technology coming our way out there. A wireless keyboard has been a nice addition.

I did have inital concerns with the Panasonic's due to some internet reports on 2009's that were losing color early in life but as of early Oct 2010 in a report on CNET, the 2010's they are testing are up to almost 2,500 hours with no noticible loss in color/picture performance.

I like the LCD/LED's but the additional cost pushed me towards the plasma's. Sports and fast action at 600Hz is great but honestly I'm not sure I can perceive the difference between the LED 240Hz and the Plasma 600Hz.

Good luck in your decision and enjoy the new TV, Whitedust.

best choice and why

the best choice would be full HD Full LED LCD for your bright room.
LED is like an option on LCD TVs
LED can come full screen or around the edges... go with full.. best technology
LED lights are brighter, last longer and are more energy efficient.
Some one already mention Why HD

Samsung make a good TV but I prefer LG for LED LCD
two Models to look @ 55LH90 or 47LH90

A good web site to compare Van Vreedes
Then you can add all the other things Web, Apps, WI FI, ect... ect....

If it was a dark room I would go Panasonic Plasma 50..... like I have in basement

I have 2 panasonic plasmas for the last 5 years. I have not had one problem with them. They were in the 500 and 600 series. I have direct tv I think that makes a big difference in the picture also.

I'm glad someone asked the question about LCD, LED-LCD, Plasma TVs because I've been searching for a new TV. The question I have is regarding the internet connectible TV's and internet connectible Blu-Ray players, is it worth getting this option? Does anyone use the apps that come with either technology? I have Netflix through the Wii, so I wasn't sure if I'd use the other apps. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I primarily use my internet connection for NetFlix as well. That being said, I think there is going to be a lot of features released in the future that takes advantage of the internet connection. Also if nothing else it's nice to have the internet connection for updates when they are released.

We've been using the Netflix, Skype, Youtube & Weather apps on the TV quite a bit and bringing up Facebook through our BlueRay player which is the PS3.

Internet apps would indeed be VERY cool thru new TV unfortunately I'm limited by Wild Blue net speed & upload amount. My house is wired for all these apps adding to the fustration. The Northwoods has some good things but high speed internet is not 1 of those things. :( Wild Blue way too slow for this stuff!

Its worth it just for the ease of updating firmware.

I ended up buying 2ea LCD 55 inch Vizio TVs $998 each at Sam's Club in Wausau,WI. The LCD screen can be back lit by Fluorescent lighting or LED lighting with LED lighting being the leading edge lighting tech today but you pay for it. I could not tell the difference between Fluorescent lighting or LED lighting on the 55" LCDs so I bought the Fluorescent lighting & saved a bunch of money. I don't run games or computer options thru my TV & I have no interest in 3D either so I was just looking for a a large LCD TV with a great picture & good sound system. Most 55" LCDs are 120HZ but still a few 60Hz sets out there I bought 120Hz for faster screen refresh rate & would not consider 60Hz as might blur fast action. The Vizio TVs were very easy to set up with Direct TV DVR & standard receiver & the Vizio out of box quality was excellent I didn't even have to set up the stand the TV came completely assembled. I bought the sets a week apart just to make sure I liked the LCD 55 inch Vizio as much as I thought I did ...no buyers remorse. Sam's had already sold a bunch in the last week so happy I bought when I did. These are the 1st Vizio TVs I have had & I would recomend Vizio to everyone as an excellent LCD TV at a great price.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone.:) I found all the info very helpful & accurate. It really comes down to the best TV tech for your particular TV application , your vewing room & you need to sort through what features you need now & in the future. As someone advised you can run the price up quickly for options you will never need or use. 3D is very expensive & I think 3D is a fad & I'm not going to put on 3D glasses to watch TV + no 3D broadcast signal so who cares at least for now. Lots of sales on LCD & plasma TVs now as there is a huge overstock of TVs as OEMS over estimated the the number of TVs that would be sold this year very much like the sled biz so a product glutted market. Lots to choose from now so happy shopping.
Thanks,
whitedust

A couple of days ago on some world news program, a so-called expert said that the best time to by electronics will be closer to the Super Bowl, after Christmas. The price is suppose to continue to fall up until the Super Bowl. That is what this "expert" said. Months ago they were saying that now is the time to buy. I guess you go with what your instinct tells you, there sure seems to be very good deals now.

ezra is right! whatever you buy will be less a month later. Go for the best deal available. There will always be a better picture available if you are willing to spend the cash. When you go to upgrade later the prices will be even less. X'2 on the garage tv. The cabin will get a nice 46 inch lcd soon as the next generation drops under $1,000.
