Lesson In Ethanol

Wow!

Took my daughter to her first Snowmobile Safety Course last night,...
Great stuff (to re-fresh the memory banks),....
Anyway,...

The instructor (Who does an Awesome job),....also works at the local Polaris Dealership.
He pulls out this large "test tube" filled with (what looks like oil on bottom, water on top),
and asks the crowd "Does Anyone know what this is?",... then continues.
He said, "Just the other day, a customer came in with his ATV and said that he couldn't keep in running,.....So, After going through everything, and still not being able to get acceptable results,.. we drained the gas, and THIS is what we found!"

After about 30 days or so, of sitting,... the Ethanol SEPARATES from the gas. In the test tube, the bottom half,... (which looked like gas) was the Ethanol,... the top half (which looked like water) was the Gas! He then shook it up,... and after about 30 seconds,....
it separated again! He said "Once this happens, it will NOT mix back to the way it came out of the pump!" AMAZING!.
So,.... the ETHANOL sits at the bottom of the tank,... and the gas at the top,....
and Where is the line for the fuel pick up located? Of course,... at the bottom of the tank.

He mentioned that during that 40 day dry spell last summer,... many folks didn't have to mow their lawns,.... so what happened the next time they tried? He said they got at least 25 mowers in with the engines shot,... because of this Same situation.

I guess, I have to play the role of stupid here. I've "heard" of the ethanol rant,....
but until I saw this,.... never really paid much attention.
Wow!,... Lucky none of my stuff has YET to get wrecked.
He went on,... about how the ETHANOL people never considered (or maybe not cared), what that product does to 2-stroke and other smaller engines. It was Made for Automobiles. He mentioned also,... that it was either Michigan Tech OR Northern Michigan just recieved a grant to study how adding even MORE to the gas,.... (a 15% mixture) would effect snowmobiles and other "Like" engines! YIKES!

He noted that "We TRIED to light the ETHANOL-only, once it had separated,.... and it would Not light. In fact, it put OUT the flame everytime."
So,...
I found out that if I add the recommened amount of this product called: "Star Brite" (and there are others out there) to the tank of the vehicle or machine that may be "sitting around" for a month,... this can help prevent "the separation" from happening.

Guess what I'M going out to buy today? Glad I went along and "learned" something!)
Wow!
I might be reading those "tech" threads a litter more closely from now on.
CORN IS FOR FOOD, NOT For GAS.
Always something.

Of course, many of You probably knew this,... just thought I'd throw my 2 cents worth in there from an actual "Visual" experience.

Never to OLD to Learn something NEW.

THINK * SNOW!

Wow. My friend works at a ethanol plant and when we pull up to the pumps it's always ethanol free. I wish it wasn't 3 bucks a gallon. Dam government should stay out of our lives. We The People.

Isn't there a website that list stations that have etho-free gas? I know that I have heard of one but I don't have it...or at least if anyone knows what brands carry it like Zypher.

I'm not positive but i think its a law that if the gas contains ethanol it has to be noted on the pump.

Where I live all the stations sell 87 and 89 with ethonal and 91 or 93 with out.

I always run premium in my sled but 87 in everything else (car boat atv) if I anticipate it is going to sit for an extended ammount of time I either treat with sta-bil or make sure the last tank trough is premium.

I doubt that it seperated itself after only 30 days however. regardless of what people say gasoline is chemicaly speaking a very stable substance.

Do you know how to find out how much ethanol is in the gas your buying?
Read this some where, I'll try and find it, you take a test tube fill with the gas then add blue windshield washer fluid, blue will go to the bottom and you can tell the percent of ethanol your getting. I don't remember the exact measurements your suppose to use, I'll try to find it. Anybody else hear about this?

Is the Star Brite about the same as Sta-bil ? I really would like the Fitch catalyst in all my tanks, just need to bight the bullet, and pay out all those clams.

I thought all gas pumps had to be marked if the gas has Ethanol in it? This story/educational lesson is the reason a person should always us sta-bil.

I'm hope'n the instructor explained that the phase separation of the fuel is accelerated when water is present in the fuel and that this is why it would not ignite???

If yalls take regular 88 octane fuel and add ethanol you get premium...

Yamadooed, so if very little water in gas + ethynol, we shouldn't be concerned about using it? If so, good to read cause sooner or later I'm going to have to use some it.

Any of the fill'n stations around the big citys have been forced to use an ethanol blend for a few years now... It usta be a 3% blend now its up to 10% past couple years and there's suppose to be a notification sticka on da pump...

I went to the Local Polaris dealer yesterday and purchased a bottle of
that Star Brite product. 14bucks for the bottle.

Good question on the Sta-bil Nate.

Personally I couldn't believe what my eyes saw. Like snootbiscuit said,...
a Lot of us would be Floored by what he has seen.

I think the Star-Brite product helps "prevent" the "breakdown",.. and
Sta-bil helps "preserve" the LIFE of the gas. ??

I don't want to Bash those that work in the Ethanol industry ('cause I need a job also),...
but at least someone has found a product that will at least "pacify" the dilema.
I sure hope they don't raise the % at the pumps. Yikes.

reminds me,.... I better go add some off that stuff to my Riding Lawnmower tank AND my Motorcycle!

Notice of Ethanol

It is my understanding that the presence of ethanol does not have to be posted on the pump unless it exceeds 10%. I think that is wrong, I think the suppliers should state the exact percentage of it no matter what it may be. I am seeing more stations stating "Ethanol Free", so that will be my first choice, no matter what I am going to fill. Thanks for that info Vin, I would have not known the result of this otherwise.-Mezz

It takes 1 gallon of fossil fuel to produce 1.3 gallons of ethanol.

Just another example of government mandated efficiency.

fuel debate

How much fossel fuel dose it take to get oil extracted - gasoline refined and ready to leave a gas station? In the studies I have seen the 1 to 1.3 numbers include the energy to make the imputs, growing, transporting, processing corn and transporting ethanol to the gas station.
Bob
PS Our planet is not making more oil, I make more corn every year. Plus after ethinol is made there is food left over.
