lets try this again

I got my info from public statements made last year from the DNR themselves. I'm not going to dig it up because it's been brought up time and time again from last years debate. I'm sure you could look at my statistics or the web in general and find it. You made a kind reply I'm just done. If logical people think that not having signs helps I can't argue with that kind of mentality.

No problem. I didn't believe removing signs would help either. There are a few spots I really think there could be problems and the bridge signs are one of them. I was surprised there were not more accidents this past year, but not one year does a pattern make so we'll see how things progress over the next couple. I understand the logic people used when they say "if we remove signs telling you what's ahead you'll slow down because you'll have to be more careful due to the unknown", I'm just not sure I give the "Ricky racers" that much credit for their intelligence.

I think we're close to the same position on this Polarice, I was just wondering if you had something to back up your opinion. Again, no big deal.

Polarice bases all his opinion on this one single statement which in fact is true but just in the wrong context if you interpret solely by itself. I read all the text and try an interpret intended meaning. Here is what Polarice is referring to, all by itself one could hold to what Polarice is standing on, I give him that:

"The changes to the motorized trail signage program are the result of a collaborative process with stakeholder groups and should be a real improvement for trail users," said Ron Olson, chief of the DNR's Parks and Recreation Division. "The sign reductions will result in less clutter along the trails and provide for more consistency statewide."

There, I fixed it.

if you look it up you can find a lot of info. Here are some of the minutes read at the meeting: MSTAC Meeting Minutes -5- April 23, 2012 3. Facilitate collective action by the Trail Towns to create a world class recreational destination
4. Improve the buildings and infrastructure in each town to create a visitor friendly destination.

Finalization of the 2011 Recommendations Report of the Equine Trailways Subcommittee
Sandra Batie asked if there were any comments from the various workgroups. Nancy Krupiarz
responded on behalf of John Gonway, Chair of the Nonmotorized Advisory Workgroup, that they
had draft comments and will work with Sandra Batie.

Subcommittee and Workgroup Reports
Snowmobile Advisory Workgroup
Bill Manson reported on behalf of Lee Murray, Chair. The SAW approved Draft 6 of the
Michigan Motorized Sign Handbook (long process). The SAW is hoping that the new guidelines
will help slow snowmobilers down, instead of driving “sign to sign” they will “drive the trail.”
The
next big push will be an official notice, via magazine articles, announcing the sign changes. The
deadline for submittals is July 1. Todd Neiss suggested adding an educational component to
the official notice – Groomer Standards/Inspections, and Reimbursement Fees. Bill Manson
referenced a presentation that was given at the last meeting regarding trail issues off trail and
on hill. He stated that lack of snow has

I think the objective was not to just remove "clutter", but to try and focus on a more uniform guideline for the placement regardless what State trail, they would all be somewhat the same. Could you imagine if every MI county decided what road signs to place in their jurisdiction ?

edit: hey Im a slow typer

when you do a search on-line on the topic this is the most common statement you will find: [h=2]Trail signs improved[/h]
Where's the story?

LANSING – The Department of Natural Resources announced today that snowmobile and offroad vehicle trail riders will soon notice a reduction in the types of trail markings along the more than 10,000 miles of Michigan’s designated motorized trail system. The DNR implemented these changes to improve safety and provide consistent guidance to the more than 90 non-profit organizations that maintain the trails.

Oh, so we are doing this again? Like I said before, a man has a few reasons on why he does things, good reasons and the real reason.

First, The International Association of Snowmobile Administrators (IASA) is a self-organized, nonprofit organization comprised of snowmobile program administrators representing 27 US states, 10 Canadian Provinces, 3 Canadian Territories, and 1 European Country, Sweden, to facilitate communications among administrators. The IASA publishes a booklet called Guidelines for Snowmobile Trail Signing & Placement. Here is the link - http://www.snowmobilers.org/signal_guides/iasasignguideline_july05.pdf

Does Michigan know what's best for its trails? Maybe. But if you want uniformity between 27 US states, 10 Canadian Provinces, 3 Canadian Territories, and 1 European Country, just use their guidelines for crying out loud.

Second, removing the signs saves money. Here is an excerpt from the 2/21/12 meeting notes of the Michigan Snowmobile and Trails Advisory Council -

"The final draft of the Michigan Motorized Trail Sign Handbook includes less signs (less cost, less follow up) and is estimated to save a couple thousand dollars. Sign orders are due in April. The SAW is
looking into leasing equipment and will have information available at the next meeting."

Here is a link to the entire meeting notes - http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-65134_65143_65445---,00.html

They actually say less cost, less follow up in the notes.

I am glad to hear they are bringing back the bridge ahead signs, I think those are very important.
