License Plate renewals

Here I sit ready to renew a stack of License plate tabs online. Everyone hates to wait in line at the Secretary of States office right? Well the government in Michigan and the Secretary of States office can never seem to get their Billion dollar computer to work correctly always causing me to have to go into that "place of abuse" by one means or the other. Each year my stack of renewals shows up and for some reason they need "proof of Insurance" or a Social Security number from me or something. (they have all this). Question is, "Are they toying with us or are they that inept?" Why would a 1987 Thunderbird that we have had since day one registering year after year go on the missing list? Are the amazed it still runs great minus the air conditioning and drivers window sticks? Isn't PL&PD still considered Insurance? (ranting at the grand I am giving them for the sake of not having toll roads I guess). I noticed that I can opt in for the Recreation passport (state park sticker) for $10 extra per vehicle and it is only $5 for my motorcycle, bonus! I can drink "Camp fire" coffee at home.

I just tried one last week and it did not work. I tried one in Jan. and it didn't work ether. Well I guess its par for Government they don't get much right. I will say the old system worked most every time but then that must be why it needed to be replaced.
I am all for less Government! Things woud be so much better.

I have to say I have mailed mine in, wrote the check and been golden when they came in the mail. This year I did all of mine on the website and received my plate stickers for all my vehicles in about a week or so. Maybe I am just lucky all my stuff comes with a PIN#, IDK. I wonder what signifies someone receiving a PIN and someone else not? Bottom line is I have been blessed the last few years with the MI SOS mail-in system and the on-line system.

I'm sorry PR1 you have such a unlucky streak with the SOS! I don't envy you having to walk into that state building. The only advice I have for you is if you're able to do it (I don't know when your B-day is???) go to a U.P. SOS sometime when you are visiting to fill your tags. Other than the bigger cities like the Sault & Marquette the other small town SOS offices are relatively harmless, aside from raping your checkbook. I am on the West end and the office in Iron River or Bessemer is usually an IN & OUT deal. NO wait and NO fuss. Just my .02¢

Wayne,
You're audience is getting thin. Just go take care of business! That's what you get for having too many toys!

That's the government for ya! Privatize it all and we would be much better off. My son and I were at a MN DMV to get his license plate tabs and the line was long with 2 people working. The one worker watched the clock and the second it was her time for a "break", she left the other guy all alone to handle the rush of people. When your break is more important than helping a long line of people, that says it all.

times a million. Only time those slow pokes move is when the are being time studied. What a joke. So sometime this week, off I go to stand in line only to be told I forgot something in the way of paper work.

You can also go to 5 different DMV offices and get 5 different answers on the same subject. Many years ago, I worked at a heavy truck dealership and we saw this all the time! It was very frustrating.

Boy Michigan sounds likre a real runaround. I just renewed mine here in Wisconsin online Friday. 2 vehicles, and bike all come due the end of April. It was a 5 minute job on the DMV website to get all three done, and the stickers will be to my house within a week. They charge $1.25 additional per transaction, so it cost me an extra $3.75. Well worth it not having to put up with the hassle of doing it in person even though I have a DMV office 10 minutes from me. I renew the sleds online as well, and never had a problem.

I see you live near me. I went to Ionia since they seem to be much faster (comparing snails to turtles) than at the Mall on 28th st.
The pin#'s were useless this time around since the state web site did not even offer a spot to put then in. (last year it worked fine). I did have qn Insurance certificate with a messed up VIN on it, so that one did not get a pin #. Oh and I had to renew my license in person because they wanted to verify my SS#. Total came to $350 and that does not include sleds or the boat. The state also does not take VISA card, only Discover or Mastercard. Well who the heck has a Discover card???? I had a stack of visa cards to no avail. Back home I went and printed a company check, then back 15 miles to the SOS. made it just before closing, got to go to the front of the line and boy was there grumbling in the ranks behind me. I was easy to spot (if you ever been to the prison capital of MI. you know what I mean). There I was with clean clothes , freshly shaven for my picture and teeth, no tattoos, no piercings and I was wearing a shirt. Got out of there fast! lol. Can't wait until next year.
