Last season I was pulled over on I 80 near Joliet for no plate on my trailer I have a 2pl clam shell. It has a bracket and light on the bottom of the trailer. These have a short life the bracket breaks from snow drifts you lose the plate so I did not have one on. I did have the plate under the seat had all the paper work. The young female officer gave me a warning and said put it on the back. I did the next day. She said as long as she could see the plate I would be OK

Ive ran pick up truck with wi plates and non plated NON REGISTERED trailer and been pulled over in Michigan. Explained nicely to officer what I thought was ok, he was VERY skeptical, but came back and apploigized to me. Said he learns something new every day. THAT was the best time I ever got pulled over. lol

Stay tunned WI DNR has budget shortfall for fighting AIS & suggesting WI register all boat & pwc trailers as way to make up shortfall. Will this mean all snomo trailers too? Time will tell. To me if you are going to use anything maintained by the state you are going to pay thru the nose to use.

Snake,
Older thread, but I've been gone from this site since early March when the Harley came out. So you add the weight of your truck at, say 7000. Add the 2300 lb trailer and you are illegal before doing anything else. Your truck registration-weight rating covers the tow vehicle, all occupants, and the trailer and it's contents to legally figure out your actual legal weight. Being a LEO, I know that the 3000 pound GROSS Weight is accurate, but some haven't mentioned that regardless of the weight, if your trialer has brakes you need to license it in WI. I think it is like $30 for two years. The fines are crazy expensive, so I just license when in doubt.
Hope I'm not too late to help you here.

ok guys, here's what I got=2006 gmc duramax with c rated plate(8000lbs). the truck empty weighs in around 6900lbs. I just bought a trailer which is 2300 lbs empty, and from what i have read is that if over 3000lbs,then you need to plate it. I am in wisconsin. just throwing this out there to see if this added info(and responses)would help me make up my mind! also,it is a large 7 by 26 trailer, thanks guys!!! p.s.=I do realize that gear,fuel,sleds,ect....is all added into the "mix"
