Kinda like the old Phoenix store, Mohawk, MI (ca. 1999):

What a classic! The last time I was there, probably in the 1990s(?), it felt a bit like an old "продуктовый" (grocery store) in the Stalin era Soviet Union, with a creaky old wooden floor, very dim lighting — perhaps a half dozen 25 watt light bulbs in the whole place — and overwhelmingly bare shelves bearing just a meager handful of lonesome items, such as a few cans of beans, or whatever. The antique glass front counter had a modest assortment of candy bars and snack items, and that huge, beautiful antique cash register!

Don’t go dissing the Phoenix store frnash. People find out they kick you out of the Keweenaw! :)

Arbutus is a legend in these parts!

There was one in Ripley, the brown (now apartment) building near the school.

My Grandpa moved to Ripley in about 1950. I remember walking to that store in the early sixties, when I was probably 11 or 12, with some change in my pocket. Got there and I thought maybe the candy was older than I was at the time.

Arbutus Peterson - yes indeedy! And so is the ol' Phoenix Store, it sure is a Copper Country institution, and like a portal to the 1800s. I hope it's around for at least a 'nuther hunnert years! :encouragement:

A somewhat unusual name, Arbutus — I used to have a cousin(?) named Arbutus Nakkula, UP dere in da Copper Country, from my dad's side of the family. Lost contact many years ago, although there's still a bunch of Nakkulas UP dere.
