Planning my first trip out west with my two sons. We are experienced riders but mainly in the U.P. and Northern MN. Any recommendations for riding in March, is Snowy's or Big Horns a better bet? Looking for some trail, powder and a little
Climbing. Where is a good place to stay where we can ride right from the lodge?

Thanks!

If going to the big horns bear lodge is your best bet. We have went out the last 2 years over spring break (mid march) and had decent snow both times. They offer guiding and have fuel right there and can ride from the lodges.they have 2other lodges just down the road elk view and arrowhead ran by the same people. I have been to the snowys in march also and had good snow too 3 years ago. Albany lodge would be your best bet to ride from the lodge. They have fuel and food there also. I have never stayed there, but guys I ride with have and like it. Where are you coming from? I think it is a nicer drive across 90 to the big horns vs 80 to larime less traffic on 90

Snowies! Stay at the old corral and trailer up to Greenrock. At that time of year u will have the hotel and mountain to ourself if you are riding weekdays! When you going? If we are there at the same time u can ride with us day one.

Another vote for the snowies, however I'd stay up on the hill for the convenience of ride-in ride-out at Mountain Meadow Cabins (you do have to cook and bring your own gas up). I agree March is the best time to go - blue bird skies and good temperatures. Contact 3C Guiding for guide service while you are there - they will have a booth at Haydays.

As others said, Albany Lodge is ride-out as well, but it is about 30 miles from the big hills. Plan on carrying lots of extra gas as there isn't any available in the riding area (same as most places out west).

I'd have to throw out the Snowies as well but I would skip the guide and drive around the Mtn to 10 Mile inn. You have access to fuel, you can ride from your cabin and you are the closest to the good snow. IMO the snowies are a step between boondocking in the U.P and Togwotee, you can ride trails and meadows all day long in the snowies and if you want to shoot up into trees you can. There are spots in the Snowies that do pose avanlanche hazards but the trail maps pin point these areas pretty well so its easy to avoid.

10 mile is a great place to stay. Longer drive but worth it. Clean cabins, gas across the street at "the place" or right down the road. You can cook in the kitchen at the lodge. Good trail riding and good boondocking areas. Close enough to Saratoga that you can drive in and eat at a few really good restaurants. Plus there is a Polaris dealer in Saratoga.

Heard 10 mile was up for sale. Are they open?
