My wife and I have never seen the upper peninsula without a blanket of snow on it and are thinking of doing so in the 2023 season either on Memorial Day weekend or Labor Day. First question.... is everything pretty much thawed by Memorial Day weekend or is it too early for nice weekend? second question... can anyone recommend any cabin rentals that are on or very near the Lake Superior shoreline with access as we both would not only like to explore the shore line but look for yooperlites as well, and having said that what would be better the eastern or western shoreline? the more secluded the better if possible. Any information or recommendation greatly appreciated, Thank you in advance!

If you decide to hotel it instead of a cabin, I would recommend this place. It's about as close to the Lk Superior shoreline as you can get. Been going there since 1984...Great food & drinks

I think if you wanted to see the area without snow, maybe a trip in the fall BEFORE snow fly's and the tree's are in color would be a nicer trip to make, or easier on the eye's IMO< having all the fall colors, and still have mild weather
as after winter,
as I think labor day is too early for fall colors, and as for Memorial Day things may still be just getting into full green up p[ending where all you go, and weather! leaving still some of the dirtier side effects of after winter still about!t!

I gather your trying to tie in a long weekend, but My suggestion would still stand , more so in Oct, for fall scenery!
just due to the nicer things to see and would IMO< make the trip more memorable!

I prefer the N/W side of the peninsula, and based off of vacation homes and towns/destinations I'm gonna say a lot of folks share that opinion. Much prettier side of the peninsula. I mean I'd LIVE on either side happily if I could make the move permanently, but as a tourist I'm going on the N/W side.

Fitz's in Eagle River certainly meets what you're looking for in location. Good grub at their restaurant as well. They're wired a little differently than most sledders though, so you're sorta "behind enemy lines" doing business there.

In Eagle Harbor you have the Eagle River Inn. Good grub there too, but not right on the water. There's also Feltchy's Otter Belly Lodge which a sledder bought and re-opened up a year or two ago. He's right on the water next to the beach there. Also a dozen or so tiny cabins over by the lighthouse that are owned by various folks and can be found on vrbo or airbnb.

All kinds of options in Copper Harbor. None are right on the water really, but CH is where I'd go for a trip with just the wife.

Tons of options, including on the water stuff, via vrbo or airbnb in any of those three towns, or on the shoreline that connects them all. My wife and I spend a week at a place RIGHT on the water a few years ago called the Keweenaw Hodge Podge lodge. Quirky, neat place just around the corner from the Jampot and the monastary, just a mile or so down from the Great Sand Bay. All kinds of rock hounding can be done there literally not more than 25 feet from the back door.

all I have to say is WOW! thanks for recommendation, that will definitely be my place of choice! looks right up our alley for relaxation, never knew it was there. Thank you too to everyone for all the recommendations, yes looking for long weekend. Owning a business without someone to man the place when gone leaves anything other than holiday weekends feasible for any extended time off. Last year for our main trip sledding to the kee we ended up just closing shop, was our first real vacation from the shop. I will definitely be checking into fitzgeralds! thank you for recommendation! definitely familiar with surrounding area always stop at eagle river inn, one of our favorite stops when riding up there. Again thank you everyone for the input!! may have to just close up for a long weekend in October...2023.

I would second on the idea of late September or early October over memorial day weekend bugs will be worse could still be in mud season or could be absolutely perfect in May.

Not real impressed with the use of a grooved deck board on the stair nosing....LOL..Appears to be Trex Select in Saddle color.....I could order them a couple pcs. of square edged.
Looks to be on the left side of the peninsula as well.

I have always been impressed by the food there. It is real BBQ. I believe they are also known for having a large collection of Whiskey. I think Gordon Ramsay even stopped by there when he was in the UP for his TV show. I like the "behind enemy lines" quote lol I would guess the same thing, but i can look past that as long as the vibe is not too bad

We parked the side by side at the Fitz a few weeks ago to look for beach rocks and walk up the hill to see the falls. They’re adding on what looks like a new kitchen. Great food and drink but definitely agree with “ behind enemy lines”. While we were up there we met the young man that owns the Otter Belly Resort in Eagle Harbor. Definitely will stay there this winter just to support him

Doing some checking in that area has anyone stayed at the Horizon Point Cottage? also looks very nice and as stated originally prefer a cabin if possible.
