I used one of these for years. I took a bed mat from a compact pickup truck and put it on the front half of the trailer then drove up so one end of it was under the skis and brought the rest over the front of the sled and bungeed it to the sides of the trailer. made a good salt shield.

How wide can you make those trailers?

Harbor freight has a 5x8 trailer as well that you can build decking. $600 i think??? I just needed a tilt bed for no reverse and light as possible due to tow vehicle limits.

Will an 8' bed generally work for a one-up sled. I only need this trailer for occasional 3 hour drives up north.

Thanks

Will the metal mesh rear gate/ramps on 8' or 10' utility trailers be able to take the abuse of sleds going up and down the ramps?

I had a trailer with the mesh metal fold down ramp. I bolted ski slides to it. Held up to the weight of a sled no problem.

In regards to length of the trailer, I'd recommend going with a 10' or 12'.
An 8' with a gate may be a tight fit depending on the type of snowmobile.
