My son has landed a internship at the Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling, IL. He been searching on craigsist, and other places, for short term rental possible 6-12 months with no luck. I thought I would check in with the John Dee family to see if anyone has any tips or something available.
If you have any info or help please send me an email at: rwalterelectric@mei.net

Thanks

Look in Mount Prospect, the suburb south of the airport. Wheeling has a high incidence of drug busts in the apartments along Wolf Rd. I don't mean to sound racist but there is an unfortunate element dominating the population in the apartments there.

That being said, Wheeling is a great place to shop, dine, etc and is convenient to interstates and arterial roads.

I would expand your search area. Traffic can get really bad around that area but take a look in some towns like Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Mundelein, Licolnshire, etc. The drive to the airport should be under 45 minutes and there should be a lot more options more reasonably priced than heading south closer to the city.

I live not too far away in Palatine. Look around there, or more northwest better community, not being racist either, just a statement of facts.........I have an internship at a company across the street from the air port and it only takes me about 15 mins to drive from Palatine if there is no traffic.

There has to be hundreds of apartment complexes surrounding Palwaukee, err, I mean Chicago Executive, in every price range. The ones just south of the airport in Prospect Heights would be a good place to start if you're looking for short term. Just a quick Google map search and I found this one a little further west. http://www.woodland-creek.com/
FYI, everything is usually more expensive south of Lake/Cook road, due to Cook county taxes.

How old is your son? Just go to visit many of the places. They can literally vary street by street. Personally I think living west of the airport, by me has less traffic, and when you get closer to 94 traffic can get annoying around rush hour.

Apartments right around airport..... AVOID if you are not section 8
Go west on Hintz. Hintz and Buff Grove Rd has some nice apartments.
Have a guy form office staying in brook run - pretty nice place and not insane prices.
Going Further West on Hintz when you hit Rt12 is anothe rcluster of apartments. Kenicott apartments I thing. Nice area.

My cousin worked at the airport for many years. Unfortunately he passed away last year. He loved that place.

Whats across the street? No traffic to palatine? Palatine RD?!?!?! You must be working the night shift. Rush hour morn and night that road is a parking lot.

IMO its all just urban sprawl until you get out past 30 miles. Strip malls and stop lights all look the same. The only thing I might add is if you travel east of 94, you get into the affluent north shore area and prices really skyrocket. Ive lived everywhere from Chicago throughout the NW suburbs. Which is why I live in another state, 75 miles away now.;)

:) I moved 350 miles away. I hear yah scoot.
It is all a solid concrete jungle. I still work for the big A in that area. I go back often. The traffic is insane. So many people who drive like jags.
East is Northbrook / Glenview big $$$$
West Buffalo Grove, Arlington heights, Palatine. - where I would look.

Is your son going to post a thread asking about the bars in the area? Can help out there too.

I'm 20 so i dont know what his age is, but Palatine has a couple good bars along with arlington heights. I take Hintz all the way down and then just cut through neighborhoods all the way past 53 till I get away from that mess. Not the shortest distance, but I would rather drive longer than sit in traffic. Now that the construction is finished on Hintz it will be alot faster to get away from there. This summer was so brutal I was able to ride my 50cc moped to work and never have a problem keeping up haha.

Worked in Deerfield today. Traffic sucks up there. When are they going to stop building strip malls and Office complexes?

LOL, never. They've already been tearing down old stuff to build new stuff. Location, location, location.

Don't get me started on the Naperville area or Orlandpark.

I hear that. My grandparents had a farm out in Warrenville (my dad called it the sticks back then) until a developer bought the property in the '70s. Then they moved way out here, figuring it would take several decades before the crowds made their way out this far.

The Dammm Inn (Hintz and Milwaukee) Trip in to the past. That place was a gangster hang out. Al Capone types.
Its also like Spencers Gifts with all the wack stuff in there for sale. Seeing this place form the outside you would never go in. Do it!

You been there in last couple of years since they finished all the construction? If not you will not recognize it.
They put up a dike wall all along the river with pumping stations. Army Core of Engineers... The intersection is changed too. Coming River to Milwaukee, you can turn both ways now. Same going North you can turn left on to River where you never could before.
