I am hoping you guys can help me with our trip...new area for me....we will be going next weekend.....I was there a few years ago...and those trails were outstanding (Lakewood, mountain areas)...found a great steak joint (I think it was called the weatherwood??...is it still there)...We also had some fun at a place called the school house (I think??)

Any tips...conditions, good places to eat, cool things to check out etc....please let me know.

Thanks

You are talking about the Mountain area. Weatherwood is right next to Skinny Daves. Great area and great people.

The railroad grade gets pounded pretty good but the trails outside of Townsend, Mountain and Lakewood were pretty good. They could use a couple of inches to help freshen them up.

I know Lakewood was the lowest we were going because of lack of snow so you want to stay north and off the railroad grade. If they get another couple inches everything should be good up there. They do a really nice job of grooming and love snowmobilers and ATV's.

Valley Inn is got good food and spirits. Maiden Lake has good prime rib.

Town Hall in Townsend has good breakfast.

Waubee Lodge and they have good food and very nice place. They have fisheree this weekend so will be busy and trails will most likely be beat up that way.

2-3 inches of new snow yesterday and all clubs groomed last night. Has been better north of Mountian, as Mountian / Chute Pond area is thin. As stated above, grade (Corridor 7) is usually the first to go, but all other trails to the north, west, and east are in good shape. This weekend the Lakewood club (Paul Bunyan) has their fundraiser and fisharee on Waubee Lake, and the MS ride with a 100+ riders is in Carter. Could be crowded and pounded depending on weather, but they will also groom if they can! Now if you are talking next week, with some more new snow and potential of a big storm next week per John (2/2-3) then you are talking about potential excellent conditions. I have put on about 500+ in the area this year, and it has been better than you would think. Not great, but good. Quiet, don't tell anyone else!

It sure is a great area, especially once you get away from the traffic along the Corridor 7 / Hwy 32 area. A good day loop if basing from the Lakewood/Wabeno area is to go north to Armstrong Creek, east towards Goodman/Dunbar, south to the Silvercliff area, and then back west. About a 150 mile loop, and like I said, traffic really decreases once you get away from Hwy 32. Some good snowmobile stops on this loop is either the Green Shack in Armstrong Creek or North Country Inn in Dunbar.

The trail splits at the Valley Inn after you get through Townsend and before Carter. You can take the RR grade and go to Carter, Wabeno, Laona and north or you can take the LMT and go back behind and ride in the woods. The good thing is you can loop around and not ride the same trail twice.

It should be fine up there. Usually about 5-10 degrees cooler up there. I would think if you stayed off the grade it will be fine.

Conditions varied...the lmt 7 and 8 trails were very thin and snirty....the railroad grade was rough at times over the weekend...it got very soft sunday...grade was flat and smooth from wabeno to laona this morning...did get a dusting of snow over night...trails were fair...with a few good areas....we had better trails west of crandon, and towards pelican lake....some of the hodag trails were really nice too (today)....the Oneida a school forest was rough
