Looking to buy 2005 polaris 800 switchback, good or bad idea?

Just wanted to get some input, I found a 2005 polaris 800 switchback with 2300 miles, for sale, where there any problems with this motor and year sled?, should I go for it? or should I walk away? how's the fuel mileage on with this motor, I would expect it to be worse than my 600.

any problems that I should be aware of?

thanks for any input

the 05 and before 800's were great motors, its a great sled with older technology but will go like heck and last forever

I read that these motors have problems with the cranks, is this true?

The Crank issues on the 800 were most common in 2001, then less in 2002, then almost non-existent for 2003.

1) My 2002 800, 6400+ miles, .0025" crank run-out when I sold it. (Had the clutch balanced)

2) My bud's 2003 800, 4500+ miles, .0015" crank run-out, still with us.(Primary clutch was balanced)

3) My other bud's 2002 800, NEVER had the clutch balanced, crank failed at 7500 miles.

My advice, remove the clutch and check the run-out, .002" or less is what you want to see.

Then remove the primary, send it out to have it balanced, the best $35.00 you'll ever spend.

nothing wrong with that motor. Make sure you have titanium VES valves in it and not the aluminum. Poo changed late yr. to titanium. also your at the mileage that the drive bearing goes out. No big deal to change it out. If speedo stops working it will most likely be the bearing. Also Poo was pretty much past the Voltage regulator issue at that point also. The vlotage regulator for that sled is cheap compared to current model voltage regulators. BUY IT! $3000 would be fair price. $2500 would be a great deal. How much they want?

I put 8800 miles on my 01 800 xcsp in 2 years. no crank issues. Drive Bearing, regulator and track (stud pull thru), period. Sled now has 23,000 miles on it and got a top end gasket set, and another track. still running strong, still crank is fine. did not have VES on this sled.

Il go the other way on this argument, my dad and I buy sleds to rebuild and sell or to ride as our own and since november we rebuilt an 04 and 02 both at around 4000 miles and both with the clutches laying in the belly pan. Tomorrow we are picking up an 03 and sometime next week another 04 both that had the bearings lock up. Last weekend we had 2 other guys that called trying to sell us their sleds that had locked up cranks but they seemed to believe their sleds were worth over 2 grand. Now by looking at the sleds they were in great condition but I can bet my life they didnt balance the clutches or pull good maintence on them. From what im told the wide bearing kit installed takes care of the problem, so thats what we oviously have done when the crank is rebuilt. Dont get me wrong, these are really great sleds and thats the reason we buy them, but make sure to do some homework on that sled and see what the guy selling it has done. If you get the clutch ballanced and do some work like cleaning the valves and replacing if needed you will be fine. BTW the new valves are stainless which makes them indestructable.

I believe polaris changed to titanium, but now they are onto stainless steel for these sleds. Nothing like dropped a powervalve into a motor.

Really not sure what your sled is worth. offer them $3000 for the sled. I thought it was a 600 at first. and miles are low. You got the "late in the season" card to play. they may bite. I would probable pay the $3000 this time of year. Get some pics for us to see. I am assuming it has a 1.5x144x15 track on it with tilt rails. A 2" lug will fit without any changes to anything else if planning on off trail riding. Is it Black and Yellow or Black and red?

$3500 is high, I.M.O.

You can find 2007 600's for around $4000 out of season

I loved both of my EDGE's when I had, them, did 10,000 miles combined on both, but after riding an IQ chassis,I would not go back to an EDGE, mainly do to the low riding position

Correct^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

STAINLESS is the newest latest + greatest for the 800 big block.

When you buy the "kit" from POLARIS it comes with a new spring + new rubber bellow (orange) it's enough for ONE CYLINDER ONLY, so you'll want to order (2) kits

Aluminum was the original.

titanium was used for a year or 2

Tell me about your Camaro?[/QUOTE]

Polarisrider1-

1969 base camaro, I have the original motor and trans, but now it has a GM ZZ4 350 crate motor in it. turbo 350 trans, had the original white interior in it when I got it, but I switched it over to black, and put pro car rally seats in it, a lot more comfortable to drive now. previous owner painted it(not the best job, but good enough for now, great for a daily grocery getter. still has the original drum brakes on it, but after the snow melts Im installing disc brakes.

Missed it.

Couldnt get out to look at the sled fast enough, to much stuff going on with my kids.
the sled sold before I could get out there, will just have to keep looking,

also it turns out the the engine was rebuilt at 2,000 miles- crankshaft failure :(,\

seemed like a very good deal, saw several '04's and '05's 600's, 700's, & 800's with more miles priced higher and not as good shape

After talking with a few FIB's in here, I find sleds and sled trailers sell for less in Michigan (mainly lower peninsula) than in other states. Maybe because we have so many? not sure why?
