Lost a great friend /companion on Friday

My daughters service dog Willoh passed away on Friday from injuries she received in a freak accident on Labor Day at the lake. She was only 8 years old and was a great dog. My daughter saw an ad in the local paper 8 years ago that said give away 9 puppies, mongrels. She asked me what that was and I said it was another name for a mutt. We went to look at them and one came right over to her in her wheelchair and sat on her lap. We took her home and my daughter said she was going to train her to be a service dog. I had my doubts but in no time she was doing tasks and going out in public to stores, restaurants, movie theaters and sporting events. She became a read dog at the local library, visited people in the hospital and at nursing homes. When she put on her vest it was all business but she was a fun loving dog without the vest . She jumped off of our pontoon boat like she had many times before from the top of the seat but slipped and landed on the edge of the dock with her chest and bruised her lungs really bad. She was getting better but a blood clot broke loose and she died Friday morning. RIP Willoh.

Really sorry to hear this Steve. The loss of any companion dog is tough but this one is extra tough. To even post about it had to be really hard. Sometimes exceptional dogs come from the most unexpected places. This was definitely the case here. No doubt your daughter is heartbroken, not to mention all of the people that Willoh touched.

Hopefully it will help to know how many of us here share in your loss, whether they say it publicly or not.

As Love My Dobe has always said, you never get over the loss of a dog, you just get through it. That is so true. In time, I'm sure you will get a new friend and service dog for your daughter, not a replacement, but a new friend that will help make things better.

So sorry to hear of your loss. There are no words that can make the hurt subside, just time. The hurt then turns to fond memories that live on in us the rest of our lives.-Mezz
