Just bit the bullet on $2.599 min order 200 gallons....this is the most I ever paid! Wood will run out this week & I will back off electric heater. I'll have the 1000 gallon tank topped by end of August this time. Crying shame I burned all my wood this year because I was 2 years out with wood cure but the wood & electric heater saved our butts this season.

Paid 2.19 last week at Ritchie out of Minocqua who i am leased to. I called around before placing my order and Tripoli Propane was down at 2.19 while Ritchie was still at 3+. Called Ritchie and they matched the Tripoli price. It pays to call around even if you are leased.

I do not wish to bash, but do wish to provide some info:

I used to be a customer of Ritchie Oil in Minocqua, Wi for over 10 years. I have changed because I did not enjoy having to directly speak to the owner to get the "best" price. It seems that many LP companies hold their customers hostage when they have a "company owned tank". Pricing should be set based on cost of product not on having to shop around and beg for a better deal.

I was also billed for the tank pickup and copper gas line (12 years old) when I upgraded to my own tank (2009). The bill was $180 which I refused to pay. When I built my house in 1998, it was agreed that they would supply the tank and the first 35ft of gas line. I still had the receipt for the install including an additional 15 foot of copper line I did pay for. They wanted me to pay for the first 35 ft at current pricing, saying that it was their line. I told them to come get it from under my driveway. They also charge you to pickup their tank when you stop using them. I found that to be unfair. I purchased thousands of gallons of lp over 10 years from them and they did not care less.

Sorry for the rant, I just do not like companies trying to take advantage of people. And yes, I am not happy with any of it even though it is all over.

I have heard where the propane company will even charge you for removal of fuel from THEIR tank upon replacement. Seems like the LP industry took lessons from the ice cube industry, which by the way is a monopoly owned by some guy named 'cold hands' Lou.

Going to be a lot of folks trying to catch up on the wood. Seems every one burned more than expected.

Last season when i got rid of bowman gas, they filled my tank.... I ws like ***, I am cancelling. So then they told me they would take the gas back that they would only give me 1$ a gallon. Restocking fee or some thing. They had to take it back being a rented tank. The new provided wont transfer the gas from old tank to new. Crooked crap.
Never again. Lesson Learned.
Ferrell gas now. Locked in pricing.

Ritchie used to be easy to deal with now a PITA I agree. Been with them for 10 years & called around usually all about the same. This year I didn't take the 1000 gallons in Fall thought I would make change in Spring didn't want a lot of gas left in tank.....of all the years to do that.... RIGHT!! ....Oh well it's in the past & never ever going to do that again! As far as firewood anybody in Phelps area want to provide wood give me a PM & we will do biz....I'm out.:)

Ferrell, big time crooks. Back in 05 i got my lp from Ferrell, i called to lock in on a price, the lady told me they couldnt give me a price because they did not know the effect that katrina was going to have on prices. So i called another supplier, he said here is our price, cheaper than what i had been paying. I called Ferrell back and told them to come get their tank.

I had Ferrell for the first 2-3 years of my place, and I had the same run around with pricing. I had to quote it around a couple times, called them back and they matched.
That's completely unethical so I switched and relatively happy now.

WD, I have some wood that's been stacked for about 3 yrs. now, another pile that's been there 4-5, may not be as good.
Mostly birch but some oak. I don't have a wood burner and not sure I'm getting one, at least not before I'd use this wood.
It's buried in snow now, but when we thaw out, I'd give you the address and you can take a look. PM me.

since I lease my tank, which is dumb.......

how much would it cost to buy my 500 gallon tank? I have leased it since 07 when I moved here but not sure that's smart. I would like to be able to check around. I go through 1200-1400 gallons a yr but looking for advice.

thanks,

M8, I own the tank at my camp. The research I was doing before I ended up with that camp is this. Across the north woods this seems to be the norm. The same people that lease the tanks, sell the tanks in the north woods . Have a friend bring a certified tank from down south, 1/2 the cost. The only thing I can say??? Pro pane sales in the north woods ,is like alcohol distributing in Chicago .

I,m looking to add a 250 ,or replace with a 500. There are a few of my friends looking to do the same. Buying in bulk is the way to go. Once the heating season is over,I will be buying a few tanks.

I brought a tank from down south and installed it. I have a guy in the area that sells tanks. Older and a side line deal . Pm me and I will see if he will take tank to the north. Or set up a way to own your own tank.

I have had Ferrell For 14 years. They are always about a 5 cents higher then some of the other local companies. BUT they are the only company in my area this year that DID NOT run short, DID NOT break their contracts with existing customers and NEVER left me wondering if I was gonna get a fill in time before I would run out. They even just called me ahead of my last fill to ask if I wanted to put in more gas then was left on my contract? OR just put in what was left in my contract and fill again later whan price goes down a bit more (saved me about 200 bucks) So I really think it depends on your local office. Kinda like sled dealers. I was gonna shop around for a little better price this spring but after what some of my neighbors and friends went through this winter with other companies I think Ill stay with them.

On a side note When I called them in JAN and asked if I need to worry about a shortage, The lady said "we would NEVER let our existing customers run short" Had a few neighbors run out this winter

Milton propane operates the same way down here. You have to comparison shop every year to get them to price match. I'm GLAD i switched to natural last fall...

A used tank usually runs around $1.00/gal capacity....
