Maple Syrup

Anybody else trying to make Syrup this year? Just wondering how the sap is coming for you. Sap was flowing good for one day and not much since. Not looking good, hopefully the nights will get cold, but not looking like it.

It's going to be tough this year. We're not getting the night time freeze/day time thaw cycles that really get the sap running. Under normal conditions I may make as many as 12 to 14 quarts of syrup before I shut it down. If this weather pattern continues to hold I highly doubt I'll be able to harvest much more than 50 or 60 gallons of sap which for me only transpires into about 5 or 6 quarts of syrup.

This is our first year making syrup and we have already cooked down 50 gallons of sap and have another 25 gallons in storage to cook down Saturday. I'm very happy with our outcome so far, but it would be nice to get another 25 gallons of sap at least.

My son and I have been making maple syrup the past 4 years. On the 28th of January, my son suggested that we should tap the trees. I thought he was nuts! It turned out that is when we should have tapped them. We are in the Appleton area and we put the taps in mid Feb. and it's been a tough year. Some trees were budding out already and didn't produce at all and some did ok. We just pulled our taps this past Sunday and we made about 6 gallons of syrup, so it turned out well. overall this was a tough year.
