anyone know how I can obtain paper snowmobile trail maps for Marquette and Munising areas, and I don't remember if in those counties but maps that would include where Eben ice caves, Jack Pine and Big Spring are located. Looking to obtain maps before heading up there. looking to have them mailed to me, I am in SE Wisconsin

Not sure if this will still be an option as this was from 2017, but when I planned a backpack trip this was an email I got from the Alger County C of C. This was a very nice map and it was quite large. Here is a copy/paste of that email. Maybe you could email or call. I actually had some pictures that I took of the map (attached).

Kevin:

We had to purchase the current map we have available. It covers the entire central region of the UP (east to west from Paradise to Marquette, north to south from Lake Superior to Lake Michigan) and is printed on a waterproof/tearproof paper. It has all of Alger and Schoolcraft counties and much more. The gas stops are marked as are any restaurants, pubs, etc. that advertise on it. As I said, we had to purchase them. If you would like to purchase one for $7.00 we can put it in the mail for you. If interested, please supply your mailing address and cc information. You may phone in the info, if more comfortable, to us at (906) 387-2138. Good detailed maps are getting hard to find, that's why we chose to go with these.

Thanks,

Kevin, I believe I know the map you are referring to and I believe it shows all of the eastern U.P. was hoping I could find a more county specific map, I will check with them to see if one is available, Thanks!

Try Alger, Marquette & Luce counties for maps. Generally the maps aren’t there but with the local businesses.

The Michigan DNR maps online can be helpful and many are now using Polaris’s trail map. The Polaris app is a crowd based mapping so it can give you some live feedback for food, gas and obsticles.

I have maps of the areas you are interested in (as well as 10’s of thousands of miles). if you want I can send you photos to get you started.

I'd prefer to stay over @ White Pine in Christmas its located next door to the casino and right on the trail. Also you can visit Mt Arvin and head over to Big Bay and Lanse.

as far as? stopping at places? trail maintenance? I only remember just riding through there
They have a trail on the west end of town so you can pass by but they don't have trails within the city limits (as far as I know) and don't allow you to pull up to businesses like in many other towns in the U.P. I believe that's what Don was saying and I agree with his assessment.

not a big deal, I don't remember stopping there for anything anyways, however I do remember crossing I believe it was 41 on sleds to get to a Marc's Big Boy, that may have been in Marquette. Do you by chance know if there is any place to park truck and trailer for the day in Munising area by trail? going to base out of L'anse but trailer to Munising area for day ride

The gas station next to White Pine Lodge in Christmas has a huge parking lot that I've seen truck/trailers parked at. If you want something to eat, Foggys or the casino right there.

x2 Just remember if you want to use Polaris Ride Command, you need to download the maps to your phone since cell service can be sketchy and you'll be using the phones gps.

A couple years back they installed a tunnel under 41 on trail 14 to Big Bay. Makes crossing 41 sooo much safer. However the north side of 41 has been developed and makes for some parking lot driving if you go off trail and head to stores, gas, food, etc.

Give us an idea where you want to start and end day by day and allot of us can recommend food & fuel stops.

There is a park-n-ride east of Munising that puts you out in the "Kingston Plains" area. Here are the GPS coordinates: 46.52674389135338, -86.22142551854616. It's kind of out there a ways, but it is plowed by the county, and puts you in a good spot to make a loop to Grand Marias/Pine Stump/Seney. If you park n ride further west towards Munising or Christmas and want to ride east to Grand Marais or Seney, the section of trail 8 running from Shingleton east to this Kingston Plains area can get pretty pounded out even early/mid-day. This park n ride that I mention puts you to the east of that section.

It's been a few years since I rode through Marquette on the way up to Big Bay, the surface crossing of 41 was not fun, the tunnel is news to me, sounds cool, looking forward to seeing that next time. Previous posts are correct, there is very little trail access to businesses in Marquette. On the west side of town there is the trail 14 crossing (tunnel) that I think passes you by a gas station. I think there is a spur trail on the south side of 41 that will run you closer into the east side of town and I think it ends around the Holiday Inn area. There might be a restaurant or two on that spur. On the west/south side of town the trail goes past Mount Marquette which is a bit of a small bluff and has a nice lookout over town and the bay/lake. The trails in that east and south of town area are hilly and twisty and can be rough/thin, and on a busier day you will probably encounter people cross country skiing/walking/snow shoeing/fat tire biking some sections of these multi-use trails. I wouldn't let all of this deter you, generally speaking just don't plan on Marquette being much of a "destination", more less pass through on your loop heading somewhere else in my opinion.

heckler56 and to all who have responded I first want to thank everyone for their input! and yes once I get routes planned out I will definitely reach out, I can pretty much ride the kee with my eyes closed, but been a while since been in the eastern U.P. I dont use electronics or GPS so that information would be greatly appreciated. kevinj e-mailed me some pictures of maps of the areas in question and I will be contacting the municipalities to see if I can obtain paper copies. Again, I thank everyone for their input! It is greatly appreciated!

Euphoric another option is to trailer to Gwinn and park at the UP North lodge, then ride east from there to Grand Marais and back. I have done this many times. It's right on the trail, close to gas stations in Gwinn and a round trip to Grand Marais is something that can be done depending on how fast you ride.
