Last few days of snows helped us tremendously. Grooming is in full swing and trails upgraded from poor to very good. It’s smazing how fast trails can improve. During the Christmas break, we had low snow, heavy traffic which made for sub par canditions. 109, 13, 3, 12 and shaping up fast. I groomed to Rockand today and 95% was very nice, flat like a highway. Still a few spots that need more snow pulled into the low spots that water flow undercuts but all in all worth riding. Still have a bad spot that is going to be rerouted coming into Rockland (13) where heavy rains cut close to 48” of errosion. No need to avoid that trail because you can go around the bad spot. Detour should be cut any day.

We rode from Houghton back to Minocqua yesterday morning...Grooming started at Twin Lakes (At Mosquito) and were in great shape. From Houghton down to there was very rough- I am used to them grooming overnight.

I am curious- we rode up to Copper Harbor on Sunday, but there was not much grooming going on and most all trails were rough (unusual for that area- note: traffic was not bad). Is Kewaunee County cutting back on grooming this year due to the funds spent repairing trails?

Great question, this was reported to me by a secondary rider too.

We we riding the Keewenaw over New Year's. Saturday was a mad-house. We were only able to ride the afternoon by the time we got to Houghton. We headed north, and turned around before we got to Calumet. Unbelievable traffic, and horrific trail conditions. Sunday most had already gone home. Traffic we actually pretty light. We went north again, but it was obvious nothing had been groomed. We got some decent trail conditions north of Calumet. But still - everything was pretty rough. On Monday we rode south and very little traffic. The grade was horrible - still no grooming. But it got really nice at Toivola. Then the grade was really nice. Trail 13 down to Pat's was terrible. One sled wrecked on a huge ice-burm. The grade back from Pat's to Toivola was really nice. But again, from there back into Houghton was really bad. It seems from Toivola to Calumet just isn't getting any grooming attention.

Thanks again Lenny and the crew.
We met quite a few groomers making first passes after the snow. We also rode those same trails while it was raining a couple days earlier. It is pretty easy to see how much things improved with snow and the extra work of those first groomer passes.

BTW, it looked like a lot of work. I mean a lot of work. Watched how much time it took to run the drag through some of those high crown curves and side hills.

just in time..will be UP tom nite and bombing thursday with durph..hope it doesnt warm UP like it says

PD, the 48" hole Lenny is talking about going into Rockland is the one I had given you a heads up on. Hopefully it is marked off now as it wasn't in early December. There was also one on 109 about midway through that got my attention too. Again, that was early season.

Have a good ride will keep in touch!

Hardline, is this hole that is being mentioned at the bottom of the hill right before you cross the road to head into Rockland? I remember it was a wet spot that several sleds got stuck in last year, this was early December though.

Hi Brad.

We got off to a pretty rough start. We had two machines break down over the holiday period. Plus were still in the process of training new operators because there was not enough snow to groom until the holiday period. To top it off, one of the new hires that had been trained decided to quit last week because he did not want to groom on weekends!

All of this happened during one of the busiest periods I have ever seen up here. I heard that a couple of restaurants ran out of menu items because it was so busy!

The two machines that were broke are now back up and running. We still have some training to do with new operators, but are working 18 hour shifts right now to get things all set for next weekend and get everyone trained. When they train, they go out during the day, which is not nearly as effective as night grooming, but once the training is all completed, all trails will be groomed at night, with any daytime grooming being secondary.

Thanks for the update! I was worried it was a funds issue. Sounds like a temporary set-back but things should be back on track.

thanks for the update Lenny,
has anyone been in the woods around Greenland or is it too early for that?

Definitely not ready other than logging roads. Some guys are "trying" but with the amount of snow they have doing any sort of tree riding will most likely result in broken chit. Trust me if it was halfazz rideable I'd be up there already.

If you're rich, or a sponshured rider, you can ride the woods, if not, i wouldn't, not enough snow yet, unless your just bombing logging roads.

Hey Lenny, never want to bash about grooming but any idea why trail 13 from Twin Lakes to Pats is not being groomed? Usually one of the best trails around but terrible on Thursday and looked like it wasnt groomed in weeks if at all this year, plenty of snow and didnt really see any water problem issues, thanks Lenny , had an awesome 3 day ride other than that.

Cant remember what post it was on but thought John had chimed in that there were breakdowns of 2 groomers in the area and that those issues were now resolved and that they were also training new groomer drivers and that there was limited times they could do so, but sounded like issues were resolved, Im sure the lack of real rideable snow side stateside has also greatly increased traffic especially coming off of a holiday weekend.
