measuring snow depth

I live in princeton illinois,crazy snowfall predictions tonight.How do people measure/estimate snowfall totals when wind blows at 40 mph????????

It can be pretty tough when the wind is blowing so strong, but you just have to find an area that the wind is not impacting too much by either depositing snow or scavenging it.

I found that my picnic table on the deck works well to measure depth. it is protected on 3 sides.

1) snow has not reached beard, (not rideable bring extra carbides and high fax)
2) snow just above nose, (rideable but off trail better)
3) just a hat showing,(conditions good to great)
4) can't find gnome, (awesome!!)

Buried, I would have to dig to find him. We have to be getting close to the 2 foot mark and soon driveway piles will be even with the base of my windows.
