Must just cross paths. Slim, I am very reluctant right now to pull out the call as it assuredly will be the last straw in this old camels back. When the call is made, it is made for everybody, right now, I don't need anymore for a awhile. :nightmare: Hopefully I can get some resolve quickly, sciatic pain for a few weeks is literally a pain in the azz, currently waiting on the next course of action. We have decent snow cover up here guy's get it while it's here.-Mezz

Mezz if you don't mind me asking what have you done for your sciatic pain so far? I have had for almost 2 months it sucks. I have seen a Chriopactor and physical therapy with no luck so far. MRI next week to try and figure out what is going on.

Ater you do the MRI and hit a wall you cannot live with go to the Mayo Clinic, they have an operation there specifically for this type of pain.

One more thought, you basically have to be in unlivable pain to be seen there. Patients may be rejected before they see regional back surgeons but can subsequently get an appointment once those surgeons write reference letters that they have exhausted their efforts.

Dr. Krause at the Mayo did my back surgery in 1997 (wow, that is a long time ago). He thought I would have needed a second one by now. I won't say I haven't had a flair up or two, average one every other year or so because I did something stupid, but otherwise lower back pain free almost 100% of the time. And the technology has changed so much since then. Was very happy with the Mayo. I saw 4 other doctors before I felt comfortable putting a knife to my spine.

I have stage 3 degenerative disc, when I have a flare there are times simply pushing gas pedal in my truck can be excruciating, or simply getting dressed as well. I have outlying health issues that limit any kind of drug treatment, for me and it took going through a handful of them but finding the "right" chiropractor makes all the difference. I want to hold off any kind of procedure as long as possible, I know there are a lot of good doctors out there but I hear just as many horror stories as good ones so I want to hold off as long as possible so I am not limited from doing things I enjoy, hopefully that will be at a ripe old age when it wont matter anymore, if I see old age. :uncomfortableness:

So far, aside from several Chiropractor visits, I have had a couple of steroid injections, the first did nothing, the second has shown signs of improvement but it is short lived. I have been on muscle relaxers & pain meds which have provided short lived relief, though at least I can get a better nights sleep, not great, not totally undisturbed but better than waking every 1-2 hrs in pain. I had an x-ray done & am currently waiting to see what if anything shows up. Doc says perhaps he could do an injection directly into the problem area depending on what is revealed. The next phase would be an MRI, and from there, your guess is as good as mine. It's a real bite when sitting, standing, walking or laying down is painful. This isn't my first rodeo, but, it's been a while & it just burns you out. -Mezz

To the guys with the back problems, did you all play highschool sports? Just a question don't flame on me. I just worked hard physically after highschool for many years. Now have a stupid office job so I am a fat *** but I literally have zero pain or problems with joints or anything. Didn't play much for sports in HS. Golf and a year at soccer. Was it. Just see so many of my buds and guys at work that are in good shape from the looks of it dealing with back, hip, shoulder, knees you name it. The only thing in common was multi sports highschoolers.... Just a thought.

Back 3 months ago they thought I had sciatica. After getting a couple adjustments and starting physical therapy as insurance and medical protocols dictate, an X-ray showed L5 going forward and s1 backwards. It seemed after every therapy or adjustment I felt no relief. Luckily hunting season started and both practitioners were gone, then all h$ll broke. I could no longer walk, sit or stand. Took a week to get a mri. The mri showed the nerve was wedged, surgery was needed immediately. Did the adjustments or therapy stretches causes further damage to the nerves, no idea. It has been over a month and half since surgery and my toes, ankle and calf feel asleep with occasional shooting pain. The jury is out on whether this will clear up and some have said it can take years to heal the nerves.
Take care. Be careful with adjustments and therapy until you know for a fact what is going on with your spine. It cost me missing snowmobiling for the first winter in 40 years and that is excruciating!!!!

When my dad had his back surgery the doctor told him that he was literally a few chiropractor appts away from severing the spinal cord. I agree with what you have said here. He also played football and ran track in HS.

FWIW - you are doing exactly what I would recommend. I would not do surgery until the last step. I have been in your shoes - shooting pain that makes your eyes cross. Socks/shoes, no way I could do it. Driving, almost impossible. I can remember needing to take 5 minutes just to get out of a car. So I get it. Find a good back quack that gives you relief. That is the best thought. From there stretching to keep things loose. I do a bunch of yoga moves. And then if you do need surgery, and you will know when, do your homework. For me, the pain was so bad I couldn't walk. I was at Octoberfest in La Cross and a buddy had to carry me home (we were both under the influence and could not drive). I couldn't do that to my friends anymore. Surgery was the next step.

I see a spine doctor at Froedtert and that was also his recommendation as well, wait until there is no option and yes do the stretching thing and I agree about the back quack, seen many and am very happy with the one I have, for now better than the alternative.

Well got my MRI I have a herniated disk. Have any of you been diagnosed with a herniated disc and if so what did you do? Surgery or something else. Hoping to avoid surgery if possible.

I have had 3 spinal blocks done. Went to several Chiropractors. Had 2 different MRI done and went to 3 different hospitals over a 2 year period with no relief of pain. Then I had a customer suggest I try Acupuncture. I thought no way in **** that would work but I had nothing to loose.
the first appointment I Thought I felt a little better. I was told it would take some time to make a big difference and to have patience . I went 3 times a week for 6 or 7 months. It did help me big time . I still go in for a tune (as I call it) every couple months . It made a believer out of me.

I was in an auto accident circa 1969. Totaled the car.

A friend picked me up from the scene. He was on his way to spend the weekend at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, and invited me to tag along. As I was without wheels, I agreed, as that would be a helluva lot better than moping around at my apartment for the weekend. Thank Dog he was driving a Peugeot, with their typical blissfully smooth French suspension and comfortable seats. Ahhh!

On the way north, we stopped at a coffee shop at Rimrock, AZ. As I extricated myself from the car I realized that I was unable to stand fully erect, but was bent forward at nearly a 90° angle! After the coffee break, we proceeded on to Bryce Canyon.

Upon arriving at Bryce Canyon, we saw a sign on the trail down below the rim, and decided to hobble town the trail just far enough to read the sign.

Oh look, there's another sign just a short way ahead … and another … and another …

Hah! We wound up taking the Rim Trail south, hiking back up to the Lodge for lunch — about ¾ mile in all. After lunch it was back to Phoenix in the luxurious Peugeot suspension and comfortable seats. About 500 miles in all (each way).

I checked in with my GP very soon after. He said the Bryce Canyon hike was probably the best thing I could have done for my back!

About ten years later I began experiencing experiencing significant back pain, and would up hobbling around at home and work for a number of months in "Sciatica City" with a cane and wired up with a TENS unit. (My doc believes in conservative treatment.)

After some time with no improvement My doc sent me to a sadistic physical therapist who tried a number of things, finally stretching me on a medieval "rack" until I was screaming bloody murder! Well that was the end of the "rack".

Soon after, an MRI revealed two herniated lumbar disks (L4 & L5), followed soon by a series of three epidural corticosteroid injections about a week apart; each brought increasing relief, allowing me to avoid surgery.

I still have some residual lower back pain, especially after standing for long periods, but I'm not complaining.
