Michigan boat registration question

I have a question I hope someone can answer. I'm looking at older 12-14' aluminum v-hull boats for sale that I can put an 8-10 hp outboard on and some of them have bizzare LONG series of registration numbers on the hull, not the "MC 0000 AA" format, but long series of numbers that are about 8 or so numerical digits long. What is up with that? Are those boats that were assigned those non-standard registration numbers because they weren't registered when new because they were used as rowboats and didn't require the Michigan registrations? If I register an older boat that didn't have registration when new, would I get assigned a weird long registration number? TIA
