my 14 year old son will be riding on the trails/roads this year in Michigan
I looked it up on line and they offer safety courses on line and they say you can study, take the test, pay the $30 and ride
This sounds convenient, is this legit and the best way to go?
Thanks ahead of time

I also found a course 15 min from home and 5 min from work for free also with a volunteer instructor

The course really does provide some good insight into safely operating a snowmobile and things to watch out for as well as the rules. I would actually suggest you take the live course together. You may be surprised at what you learn.

I cant believe MI is not requiring a live course. in MN u have to do the on line then a live classroom then seat time.
if it were my kid I would make him sit in on 1 class no matter what he thinks he knows.

I teach a class every December in the Baldwin, MI area and usually have 20-25 students...had 30 one year. Just over 2 weeks away from this year's class and right now I only have 5 kids signed up so I think many are opting for the online class. Just my .02, and I'm not saying this just because I'm a volunteer instructor, but I'm not convinced that online will have the same effect. I share a lot of personal experiences in the class and we usually have CO's or the local sheriff attend and talk to the kids about some of the good, and bad, experiences they have had enforcing laws on the trail system. I also review some of the DNR reports and talk about fatals, alcohol, speed, crashes with cars, etc. I encourage the kids to ride, and enjoy the ride, but to do it safely, and really think about what they're doing when they crack the throttle. I have also brought in a sled a few years, or bring in parts like hyfax and carbides, to show the kids what these parts are and what they do and why you should check them out on a regular basis. I have received a lot of positive comments from parents over the years, which is a great feeling. I hope the MI online class accomplishes these same goals.....just a bit skeptical......

i see what you all are saying and i agree that classroom would probably be better in the long run.
i hate to spend 3 hours a night for 2 nights going to and from classes but our friends daughter was killed on a sled a few years ago and the wider his eyes are opened the better i guess
