Millions of Cribs Recalled After Safety Concerns

More than 2 million cribs are being recalled from seven companies amid concerns that babies can suffocate, become trapped or fall from the cribs.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says most of the cribs are drop-sides, which have a side rail that moves up and down so parents can lift children from them more easily. That movable side can malfunction or detach from the crib and create a dangerous gap where babies' heads can become trapped.

The companies involved in the recall are Evenflo, Delta Enterprises Corp., Child Craft, Jardine Enterprises, LaJobi, Million Dollar Baby and Simmons Juvenile Products Inc.

There are reports of at least 16 infants becoming trapped in the cribs.

All these cribs have ONE thing in common. The side rails have slides that are NOT routered into the rail. The slide equipment is bolted on and in most cases they are plastic too.

Stupid design.

Fix them as these cribs are just fine if you make sure the rails don't go up and down.

Remember nuts and bolts?? They still work fine.

Drill and screw fixin the rail so it doesn't move up or down and use nylon nuts to make them stay tight forever.

Then when little sammy get old enough to climb out of the crib...take the crib down and put it away. Put the kid in a real bed so he can't climb on the rails.

Too much hesteria over this, and it is all driven by cheaper and cheaper designed and made cribs.

We still have brains out there....look closely at the crib and see if YOUR crib is safe...don't rely on the maker to give a hoot....it is YOUR kid and YOU need to decide if it is made right and if not...make it like YOU were going to sleep in it....top to bottom.

Why can't they just make the cribs out of wood like they used to? i'm sick of this plastic stuff! My crib was made out of 100% real oak, i don't think that thing was going to fall apart!

The cribs are wood, the side slides on plastic rails which guide the side up and down. My crib had metal, but plastic is cheaper, easier to manufacture, lasts longer etc. Not sure what the problem is, our daughter has one of these and even at almost 2 years old she can't shake the thing at all.
