Minocqua-Tomahawk Update 3-1-18

Trails took a BIG hit this week Two days of 50 degree plus weather didn't help....especially areas with direct sun light, and high traffic areas, all the roads were bare, and so were the parking lots...I say WERE....because...it's currently snowing, and coming down at a good clip..already over an inch in LDF, and roads are getting slippery....supposed to get around two inches (already close to that)..if it keeps snowing like it is...it may help some of the sun damaged areas....still lots of snow back in the woods...getting there is the trick...but 2-3 inches will make it easier...The key question is: Will the high traffic areas, and railroad grades survive the next two days (expecting sunny skies with temps in the upper 38's to low 40's)...I guess we will see...it is supposed to cool down next week, and a few possibilities of light snow...THE FAT LADY hasn't sung yet...but she is definitely warming up her vocal cords.

Appreciate your posts. Season seems to get shorter. End of February has been the warm up the last few years. Going to see how next week unfolds. Got a new sled I would like to try. But a 6 hour drive is too long to fight the conditions

If it is rideable next week, is there a really cheap hotel on trail for one person?
Here ya go, this seems to meet your criteria:
Bates Motel.jpg
Will this work fer ya?
Say hello to Norman, he's well into his 80s now, and had to downsize from the original ten unit motel after that nasty business in the 1960s). :devilish:

So, Attak Man and Swampy I just wanted to thank you for your trail reports and all the work you do on the trails. The Tomahawk area has everything that I look for when snowmobiling (snow is the obvious part).
There are enough trails to keep the rides interesting, some trails with many stops, some trails with no stops, lake riding, rental places for my friends with no sleds, good lodging choices, many dining options, and just enough fuel stops. There are also four directions one can go. You would run out of snow before you ran out of trail. Such a great area-can't wait to come back.

Thanks.....so far so good...between 2 to 3 inches of snow fell across the northwoods, and it's 24 degrees (low tonight 15)...the question is will the railroad grades, and high traffic areas survive tomorrow and Saturday (high 30s, low 40s and sunny)....the wooded trails are excellent right now...but that can change quickly this time of year....so ride while you can..lots of snow in the woods yet

it's cold this morning...it was 6 above when I got up...it's warming up quickly though with bright sunshine....if you can ride today...DO IT...trails should be really nice (I have to work today, tomorrow and sunday)...with mid 40's, and sun tomorrow...they will deteriorate through the day...but should still be rideable.

Keep your eye on the next storm system...could start as a mix late sunday, but change to all snow Monday into Tuesday....john now thinking 8 plus possible for northern Wisconsin, local Tv station saying the same thing with temps cooler for next week....so if we do get it...next weekend could be really good...it's not over yet!!!
I will update this either sunday night or Monday!!!

Took a ride yesterday West of town. Trails are Flat and Hard!! if we get the snow Monday night we might be able to salvage another good
week of riding. The groomers have been sitting for so long they're starting to rust. lol. Would be nice to fire them up and make a couple more runs.

Please keep us updated. Hoping the storm actually produces Monday and Tuesday. We may try and head up to this area from Indiana on Tuesday if some new snow falls. One guy has 0 miles on this season and I just traded for a new machine so would like to put a few miles on it. Any lodging recs? I was looking at waters of Minolta.

We are near Swamp Lake (north of Tomahawk) and got about 3-4" and still snowing as of Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Trails should be good. We are heading out to ride in a bit.

Trails were great Tuesday and Wednesday.... rode from Swamp lake over the Willow flowage to Reel Em Inn, took 5N to 10E up to bearskin, down to Hazelhurst Pub to Merc Stop and back to Swamp Lake.
