Misuse of the term "Polar Vortex"

Good afternoon John,
Does it drive you crazy too when you see "TV Weatherpersons" say things like... " It looks like the Polar Vortex will extend down into Southern Iowa this weekend"...

Isn't it true that the Polar Vortex remains in close approximation to the North Pole and never really "extends" anywhere?

Maybe I'm just being hypercritical here.

Thanks,
Bill

It does not really bother me too much, but you are right, the true heat of the polar vortex is not over areas like IA. It actually tends to hang out around Hudson Bay and has always been referred to as the "Hudson Bay Polar Vortex".

It is possible for the far southern extension of the PV to reach into the northern US and even as far south as areas like IA, but the center of the PV never gets that far south and generally stays up in Canada.

But John, I heard that the polar vortex is moving south now due to global warming. No lie, during the first real cold wave I heard someone say that due to global warming the PV was getting pressure and was shifting south which is why we were experiencing cold weather. Eventually the warmer air would settle in a long term position over the N. pole resulting in a massive ice melt which then would result in world wide flooding and global warming to the point that the PV would become extinct.

I just shook my head and changed the channel.

Yea Gary,

Everything, hot, cold, wet, dry is Global Warmings fault. They tried this same thing with El Nino back in the early 80's, only problem was, on average El Nino happens every 3-4 years, so when the next few came a long and blew all the dire predictions out of the water, the money dried up and so did the hype.

Climate scientists are not stupid, they know this horse has much longer staying power.

Its really just the news media looking for even more scary terms to use regarding the weather so you will turn to their station vs another. "Tune in tonight with our exclusive coverage on how to protect you and your family from the emerging POLAR VORTEX!!!!!!" Just a bunch of media crap.

It's true. Olaf went to town today and traded the M for a Pro. Said he was tired of seeing me ride circles around him on my trail sled.
