Modular 2 or BV2S and why?

So making a purchase at the end of the season.... although my HJC CL-14 with deflector & snowmobile shield has been doing quite well - it's time to get a proper helmet.

I have tried both on and they both seem to fit fine. They both also have what I am looking for - exhaust vent & sealed mask to prevent fogging. I have not had a chance to ride with either one - and of course with the dollar amount attached to them - good like finding a PS shop that will let me - especially in Chicagoland. So - I place my fate in my fellow upper-midwesterner's hands. I don't care how cold I ride in - so long as I can keep my vision clear and my mouth & face frost-free.

Which one - and why?

Never had a Mod2 so I can't speak for it. But I've been using the BV2S for a number of years and have good luck with it.

The pros: Rarely fogs and if it does, it's around the edges.
Very warm, I rarely wear a balaclava
Great visibility

The cons: Cost
Somewhat cumbersome to put on
Because it's so warm, it's easy to break a sweat in it, which may lead to fogging. Take it off if you have to do
anything strenuous (i.e., getting unstuck, excessive pull starting, etc.)

Don't let the little red light on the back play into your decision. Cool idea on paper, but on mine it would somehow turn itself on without my knowledge or input. I'd find it turned on all the time, even in the off-season while it was sitting on the shelf! I got tired of feeding it batteries and don't bother with it anymore.

When it comes time for a new lid, I may consider a Mod2 simply because of the cost. So I'll be watching this too, to see what folks have to say about it.

Either one is good.
BV2S is a warm helmet. And it is a little quieter than Mod2. Either way, it's pretty much which ever one fits your head and face better.

Which ever one you get, it will probably take a little bit of time to get the face mask to fit your face properly so you don't fog. I have both and both took a shorter ride to figure them out. For me, the mod 2 face mask likes to be fairly tight to my face. The Bv2s will fog if it's to tight. Almost loose works perfect.

IMO, if I had to pick 1 or the other, I would pick the BV2S. It's warmer(can be a pain on warm days though), and it's quieter.

Ps. Put Chapstick on the snaps of the mod2. Most people complain about the snaps being hard to snap or unsnap. Chapstick cures this completely. I've never had an issue after.

Interesting. Never thought about it, but I think you're right. I'm guessing that too tight would distort the intake valves and cause them to not seal upon exhalation.

I like my mod 2 and with the elec shield I don't ever even wear the mask, and it doesn't fog. Its nice and free feeling without the mask and vision is good, big shield. Sorry have no experience with the BV2S.

I have both. I use the BV2s on cold days and Modular 2 on warmer days.

I like the modular 2 overall and would use it all the time if it worked as well in extremely cold temps but that's where the BV2s shines.

I have had two BV2s helmets (I accidentally broke my first one...stupid mistake) and my riding buddy has one too. We haven't had any problems with the rear light. Maybe russholio had an isolated issue with his light. My son likes when I ride with my BV2s so I can put the light on. I usually lead and the rear light is easier to see with the whitedust that follows me than the tail light of the sled.

Last thing in case this helps. I do use my modular 2 in extremely cold temps when I'm riding on my 2 up Venture GT. That sled has a huge windshield which blocks the wind better than my Apex XTX (lower windshield).

BV2S is great. I had a HJC, then bought a Gmax modular, then went for the BV2S. Well worth the money. I think you can find one on ebay for low 300's. I did also try on the Mod2 and thought the mask was a bit restrictive.

BV2S is warm, no fogging, easy to undo the mask to talk, good sun-visor. Agree with russholio on the redlight- its a good idea but doesn't work and you'll never use it.

I have have the Modular 2 helmet I never had a fogging problem but did not like wearing the breather, put the electric shield on it and never had a problem. I bought the helmet big so I wear a klim face mask the a head sock its just more neck protection. Being 6'4 the windshield on the snowmobile deflects all the wind to me. I do not think you can go wrong with either.

Confirmed. Pushed against the mask with my hand and watched the valves distort. Less pressure appears to be better!

It's possible. I think mine is an early version, maybe it's a bug they ironed out in later models, or maybe it's just a freak occurrence. If I knew how to get at the micro switch I'd try replacing it. Even though we don't ride much at night, when I used it (and it didn't shut itself off) the riders following me said they could definitely see it.

I like my bv2s. I don't use a balaclava no matter how cold it is. It's air tight too. I do wear a turtle fur that I slip on first, then bunch it up against the underside around the helmet to make it completely air tight. Otherwise I can feel too much cold hitting through the neck area. Face thing if too tight opens up near the nose and lets breath out there. So it does have to be just right. Thought I like the helmet, I hate putting it on and taking it off. I normally wear a size XL helmet, but with it I had to go XXXL. So for short rides on warmer days I just wear an open face gmax helmet with a 20.00 snap on face shield and a balaclava. Long trips or cold weather I put on the bv2s.
