Yes, you can use your dish and card anywhere. And you should have your local channels if you have them at home, but you can't get local channels in Co. using your home account.
I have directv at home and took one reciever to my hunting camp near Louisville with no problems. I have the Indy local channels, I called to inquire about having the Loiusville local channels added and was told I couldn't have two different local areas on one account.

so any dish will work say one off a empty rental unit or do they need to be registered like the boxes

as long as its compatible with directv. No registering. AFAIK, dish network doesnt work with directv.

I didnt think locals channels worked, but maybe they do.

BTW they sell portable dishes that dont cost very much. They come with a case and you just set them up on the ground on the case. They actually sell ones that you can perm mount to your roof and will automatically acquire signal when you turn it on. But they are pricey, like $1500.

Is that seriously your set up? I've got a 6X12 I hope to squeeze into - Your rig looks like a condo in comparison. Really hoping to chase the snow w/o the lodging costs. Plan to ride all day, all I need is a (warm/ dry) place to sleep. How do you take care of the showers, heat, etc?

You'll need to take a box from your house and don't count on your local channels. If you have a flat screen and want high def you'll also need to acquire a newer dish for it to work. Nice set up by the way.

It's a little more technical than that. The first dishes were round. Then they started getting more oval shaped. Then the arm that sticks out of the dish started getting more receiving points (lnb's). Basically, the more oval the dish, the more channels you can receive. And for HD, you need an HD receiver and the bigger dish. The dish now picks up more than one satellite which is why they are oval and there are more lnb's. So, try to nab the nicest dish that's out there. I tried to simplify this, but I hope you get the idea. And yes, you can take your stuff anywhere and it will work. You just have to re-aim the dish and lock it in place.

edit: sorry harski, didn't see your post!

Yes you can do this. We take our receive from our kitchen and bring it up to our cabin in Longville and there are no issues. We also get our local channels - from the city's, not up there!

I asked the installer to give me a second dish for my cabin when he installed the one at my house, and he said "Sure, here you go!". Then he told me how to point it as well, not that difficult.

The thing to watch out for is they are starting to change what powers the dish on the newer ones, there is a little separate box you need to plug in, instead of it getting power from the actual reciever. Not sure where they are going with this, just thought I would mention it.

It's called a "SWM" (swim as techs will call it). The newer HD/DVR receivers use them especially if you have multiple HD receivers in the house. I think Erza will be okay with baseline oval dish to get HD. I think it will still transmit digital TV too which will serve the purpose.

Blkhwk, no problem I'm being a little short in my responses as I'm juggling the kids and momma this morning. Hey, get the Hawks playing would you?

I did the same thing at the cabin, and yes get the local channels. I called directv and after a few transfers between different departments I was able to have someone come to the main house and drop off a new dish. It is nice if you can get the same dish for both places so you don't have to change the settings on the receiver box. At first the guy wanted to give me an old style dish and after talking to him he gave me a new SWM dish and power box. The power box is 110v so you would need a inverter or land line to power it, and after using this set up at the cabin it seems to draw more power when everything is turned off in the cabin. The box is always powered and we run on solar power so every little bit counts for me, was thinking of putting a switch on the outlet to cut the power to the box when not in use.

I'm so fed up with the NHL I think it will take me a while to spend another dime on it. And hockey is 90% of the reason I pay for Directv.
