I'm a troll heading up to Taquamenon Falls and Indian Lake the week of the 4th. How bad are the bugs up there currently?

last year for the 4th we went there and you couldnt get the women out of the cabin to a fire, when outside they had hoods up and pulled so tight you couldnt see their faces, good luck!

How bad are they? Lets put it this way, even as harsh as this winter was, I'm kind of wishing to take a step back in time, these bastages are a plenty & they are hungry.-Mezz

Oh my gosh are they bad. If you could see my legs you would freak out. We've been starting work at 7 am now and the mosquitoes are just swarming and relentless. Today the wind starting blowing and they were not bad but in my 7 years in the UP this is by far the worst I have experienced.

Great. I finally get a summer trip planned to turn the rest of the family on to the UP and we'll get eaten alive.

I'm working in the Eastern U.P. this summer - last week they were absolutely horrible (I chose to get drenched in sweat by overdressing trying to block them), the deer flies were biting right through my initial long sleeve t-shirt. The areas I was in this week were better, but even being covered up (clothing, netting) a couple places on my body are probably comparable to how bitten up Lenny's legs are.

On the flip side, a couple friends and I spent most of the day Saturday hiking in Pictured Rocks and they were hardly noticeable, praise God.

spent last week in copper harbor camping....no campfires cause we were sitting in the screen tent when out side...good thing my dad brought his portable lp gas fire ring, we put that inside the screen tent and roasted marshmellows and made puggy pies on it.....worked awesome !! no bugs.
other than the mosquito's and lil gnats we had a fantastic time in copper harbor and surrounding towns.
i want to move there but all i have to do is convince ahhhhh u know who

Thank you for all of the replies. I still have 10 days before we are there so hopefully they are not quite as bad. What is the best bug spray to use up there?

I honestly don't use any, but, if I would recommend anything, it would be bubble wrap! LOL! Sorry I couldn't resist, but really probably the most effective. :rolleyes:Check into something with Deet in it perhaps. I think there are some OFF products with deet. No guarantees with any spray as far as I'm concerned, other than the stink.-Mezz

insect repellent

this stuff works pretty good.you can pick it up in Walmart sporting goods .Also consider wearing loose, light-colored clothing as mosquitoes are more attracted to darker colors

The last few days working I grabbed a can of "deep woods", "OFF" and had immediate relief from the mosquitoes, worked very well while roofing and you could see the little hellions come close and than just back off.

When working outside.....
Get out of shower
Dry Off
100% deet entire body.
Dress appropriately.
Use 30% off spray deet for re-treatments thru the day.

In the garage I have some serious fans. So I can work out there bug free. I have also been playing around with home made mosquito traps.
Using commercial fan. Put metal screen on intake side of fan on high. You would not believe how many you catch. Before turning off the fan and freeing the buggers, break out a spray bottle of 50/50 water and alcohol. spray the trapped ones and the will be dead in a minute. Clean fan screen - repeat.
There are many good ideas for making fan traps on youtube using this method.

This last wave of rain that passed thru really got the buggers swarming out by me. I am right on a lake and some close by swamp land.

I had a friend come over last weekend who lives in Deluth Minnessota. He just moved there and had been crying to me about the bugs.
He came to my place and said it is 100X worse. He said I cant hear the woods buzzing like you can at my place in the Munising area. Yes.... you can hear the buzzing. It is that nuts.
All seems to be mosquitos at this point. Fly's have not gotten bad YET.

Heard the mosquito patch from Agraco works. Anyone try it? Agraconew.com. I guess you have to wear it for a couple hours prior to going outside.

Buggins brand spray. All natural. Seems to work good around se mn. for the gnats anyway... They have a couple different flavors. One with deet as well.

bought a Thermacell device and consumables from Wally World. I have to say it works well in enclosed non windy areas.

What do you all think it will be like in the Paradise area in mid-August? My wife and I are planning a week of peace & quiet. We may bring the dog, or leave her with friends.

Well after reading this thread for the past couple weeks I was thinking the worst, but we've spent 2 days now in Iron River and I've been in shorts the whole time with no spray and don't have a bite. Even hiked in the woods for an hour with no problems. Off to Copper Harbor tomorrow so we'll see if our luck holds out.
