Mosquitos

The mosquitos up here in Manitowish are thick this year. Funny thing is that we are really in a drought, I have heard that it's got something to do with the snowmelt and the fact that the last few years they haven't been real bad. We have had some really nice warm weather as well and luckily a nice south breeze most days to keep them away down by the lake.

Its been pretty miserable in MN and Western WI. Just getting inundated with the smallest yard tasks or just being in the neighborhood.

It's crazy bad at my place. In the shade you can't stop moving or you are covered with them.

I haven't seen a one, of course once I say that, a swarm shows up! We're about a mile from Lake Winnebago and we're cursed with Lake Flies twice a summer. But they don't bite, they just make a mess of things.

Arrived in Presque Isle yesterday afternoon and was shocked to still have the black flies/flying gnats. They are normally here for about a week in early to mid-May but they are still here. Mosquitoes are here but not too bad. I use the company Mosquito Authority to spray every 3 weeks and last year I bought a backpack sprayer to supplement their efforts when they get bad.

In the western suburbs of Chicago where I live, about 40 miles west of Chicago, I have yet to see a mosquito let alone get a mosquito bite, I guess they decided to migrate north for all the good wholesome blood 🩸 up there… haha

What product do you use when you spray yourself? I use a product called Telstar which worked pretty good last year but not so much this year, will probably spray again Tuesday after the rain is gone again but yes the state bird is big and bad in the UP also.

Skeeters have been horrible here in the Keweenaw as well, not to mention dry dry dry. We had a very light rain yesterday, not enough to do anything significant except bump the humidity level up. Our temps have been in the upper 80's since last week-end. I haven't cut the grass fully yet, just some light trimming along the edges. I'm hoping for some decent rain before I do as I know it will fry.

Here in St Germain, we went from drought, to a full fledged frog floater, in about 3 hours. Got just under 3" of rain Thursday evening. I grew up by a SWAMP, so I know all about them blood suckers. I would rate this as one of the WORST outbreaks I have ever seen.

I saw the radar and everything was east of us in Manitowish just like yesterday it looked like Eagle River to Boulder was getting some serious rain. We never got a drop, but skeets still bad here as well.

BIFEN I/T. It's what the commercial company's use. I think I bought it on Amazon last fall and if I remember correctly, it wasn't that expensive. I don't really care what it costs because you can't put a price on constant itchy, bloody mosquito bites and I don't want to be confined to the cabin all summer long. I spray about an acre of heavily wooded forest around my cabin and at the lakefront and normally, we are not touched all summer long.

Ok this is basically the same stuff I use just a different brand. And yes I agree with everything you said about wanting to be outside.

Haven’t had rain in over 2 weeks and nothing in the forecast a week out, with all this 90 degree heat. It’s not looking good for the farmers around here
