Moving a Hot Tub

Ok I have a free hot tub if I can move it. Kicker is it is under a porch that was built overtop of it. My questions is. Can I tip it on its side to get out from under the porch? (avoid removing a post) Can I haul it on its side? (only moving it 4-5 miles) Can you winterize them so they don't freeze up? (new house aint't done yet) How heavy are they? (it is a little less than 7 x 7 feet, 5 person, wood cabinet) Here is my thoughts, build a skid out of 2x4's and tip the hot tub on its side onto the skid, use a come along to drag it on the skid out from under the porch (I should have 2 inches of clearance) and up ramps onto the trailer. once I have it on its side and using the come along It is a one man project. BUT how any people will be needed to tip it up on its side? Thanks in advance, I hope I don't hurt my back and need the hot tub before it is ready LOL!

tub

4-5 guys makes it easy i would't drag it on it's side with a come along ' put a lot of rv anti freeze in all all the jets some guys take a shop vac to all the jets first, tipping it on it's side may let all the water out

well to get it out from under the porch we only have 3 inches of clearance so how else can we get it out. I thought it would be hard to carry it out by hand with so little clearance. I would be draging it on the skid to keep from damaging the wood on the side.

From past experience, I would walk away from it. There has to be a reason they built over it. I got a "free" one once and after re-diong all the wood on the outside and cleaning it up, I found it didn't work properly. The heater was bad. The same thing happened to a friend of mine. They CAN be a pain in the arse. To me, not worth the trouble. Not saying you will have any trouble, just my experience.

bingo!!!!!!!!I am going on 8 years with ours......you can tip them to get out.....I would ask alot questions about how it works........they have come along ways in the design of them in few short years so the older ones seem to be BLAH.......I recommend cal spa they make quality product...put a sled trailer close to the deck then use a olly like you say to get it out then just put it on sled trailer.......

X3 even if all is good if it hasn't been used for a while trouble will develope...have passed on numerous free ones over the years to have friends take them just to watch them dump money into them to make them work.

if you only have 3 inches of clearance you cant tip it on its side. Drag it out the way it sits.....I have moved a couple of them....a pipe or two under it will help roll if there is a firm surface....Once the tub is out from under the deck you can pick it up with a friend on each corner. I also have also pick up tubs that need more repair than they are worth. One test you can do right away is throw a hose in it and youll see some leaks if the pipes are broken. I had one that started leaking with only a few inches of water in it. Tore the tub apart from the bottom and saw a muliti pipe manifold was cracked, an easy fix for a plumber friend. The wife grabbed something out from the tub thinking it was old leaves or something and it was a complete dry bat.....nasty teeth.

We bought a new one 2 years ago and had it delivered to the house. I had 2 places in mind to put it and ended up settling for my 2nd choice because the guys said they would have to turn it on its side to ge it up on the deck and they did not recc that. The walls are not designed to hold that kind of weight from it being on its side and can crack the framing, insulation and/or pipes if it shifts.

I invited three big strong thirsty friends over to help move mine in the house. Moving it inside was no big deal, it's just moving that amount of weight without destroying the wall opening or the hot tub is a handful. Get enough guys and buy beer, tipping one on it's side is not a problem.

1/2 block from my work is a place that sells spa's and hot tubs...almost daily I see a truck pull in with 4-6 on the back of it all on there sides..so I would say tipping it up aint gunna hurt anything.

As far as it working it is still full of water and being used so I don't think that is a problem. Thanks for all the input, getting motivated is the next big opstical.

I gave mine away as a first $500 takes it type of deal. 8 guys and a 2 place trailer got it out of here. They beat it up pretty good getting it on the trailer. Another $500 and they had all the stuff they broke back and working again. MY elec. bill went down $120 a month in the winter. I do not miss it.

mjd, I would walk away from it also. Since the NEW house is going up , install a whirlpool / jacuzi / garden tub in your master bath, down in your powerplant ( basement ) install 2 (65)
gallon power vented hot water tanks (in - line ) with 1 set at a lower temp feeding the 2nd . This will reduce temp recovery time. You will have a in door swimming pool for the kids when they are young and then when they get older and start taking 2-3 showers a day ( because.... that's what teens do ) you will not run out of water when it's your turn.
There is also the instant -on Hot Water systems , a friend has 2 big units in his house, but neither of us get a break when that energy bill comes in.

I put mine inside in the bar area! Got a big screen and a fridge right there. Installed a ventilation system that is remote so you don't hear the fan/blower and don't have any moisture problems. My electric bill is up about $10/month. Everyone says they need to be outside, but it's too darn convenient inside, and it does feel good after a day of riding.

If it is still working and being used why can't it come up out of the hole and removed from the deck that way??? I thought you said that it was covered over so I assumed it wasn't being used.

One side of the hot tub will have the pumps, motors, etc. Try to keep that side down and use the PVC pipes to make it roll easier. I've had mine for almost ten years now and my wife and I love it.

Sounds like a good plan to get the tub out. I haved moved several and put them on there side including my own and never had a problem. Just be gentle and don't be in a big hurry . I have had a hot tub for 2 years and love it. Still use it 4-5 times a week and let it run all winter. ( winter in the tub is my favorite )
