Does anyone know if we ride into Houghton on snowmobiles, is there a place we can park and take in the sights at the event? From my understanding, the trail through Houghton is not near the campus and the event? Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

There is a beaten down access trail that runs under the bridge, and behind "the ave". It goes all the way to campus, it is there mainly for guests staying at the super 8, and going to restaurants from my understanding.

there is a trail that is not maintained. It basically parallels the river. Very much a goat trail and rough. If it is warm, expect it to be fairly bare as well.

As indy said, there is an ungroomed path between the bridge and Michigan Tech. It will be bumpy and a few road/parking lot crossings, but overall its pretty easy to follow. I've used it plenty of times over the years leaving from Tech (when crossing the ice across to trail 3 was unsafe) and its never been absolutely horrible in terms of bumps or lack of snowcover (remember, it is through the city, so take it slow regardless). Once you get past the Super 8, you will come to the MTU motor pool and other academic/research buildings on the canal. Either take the road up to the top of the hill and park there on the west side of campus (more centrally located for statues), or continue along the canal following the snowmobile tracks, then a sharp right up a steep hill to the snowmobile/vehicle parking lots on the east side of campus.

That's the original railroad grade, the Super8 has no claim on it whatsoever!

Exactly, nailed it! (The students that ride their sleds to "da Tech" use the parking lots on the east end of campus.)

Thank you guys for the response. We did ride into Houghton and along that "old trail" to the East. I believe we found where you could ride up into the parking lot, however, it was very steep and fairly unsafe should anyone happen to be coming down as we were going up. I am going to reach out to the organizer of the carnival and suggest they do some "marketing" to snowmobilers on how we can get access to the event other than parking down by the hotel and hoofing it several blocks up hill to see the sights. It would be nice if we could get up there and park somehow.....
