Munising Grooming-Trail Conditions

A couple of weekends ago I had the opportunity to meet the new grooming boss in the area. He was showing off the new grooming equipment.
I think his name is Dan. (was slightly intoxicated) He was showing off the new grooming sled from Doobie brothers or some thing. I know doobie was in the name on the thing. For some reason that stuck with me. The new sled is 14ft wide! it has wings that drop down. Brand new fancy John Deere tractor with those plastic tracks. A really nice looking rig.

We chatted a bit and the groomer boss explained how he was brought in to make things right in the area. I am sure we filled his head with our drunken recommendations. Our group has always felt that $$ best spent would be to bulldoze or grade the trails in the fall before snow. If you have ever been in the area in the summer and rode any of the trails you would know what we are talking about. They could even pull funds from the ATV side. The trails are horrible. Moguls and ruts are plentiful. It takes so many snows at the beginning of the season for them to groom the snow in to all of the dirt holes. Not to mention it is hard on the skid they drag for grooming if they are cutting and hitting the frozen dirt.

In the last 2 weeks I have been hearing nothing but excellent reports on trail conditions. Even the infamous trail 8 that every one complains about.
This might be due to lower traffic because there is snow to ride to the South. Also the extreme cold temps.

Post your experiences good or bad. I am very hopeful that this new guy is going to make a change for the better. I wish I could remember his name. I know he gave out business cards. He asked people to inform him of bad conditions. He seems to care.
(note: it is the same company with the grooming contract. They brought in an experienced trail boss to run things this year because of all the complaints in recent years.

Some buds called me last night from Munising. They road from Sidnaw to Munising in record time. They said the trails were perfection the entire way. They only met 12 sleds in 220 miles. Since they are retired and have there passports with them, they said they are going to keep heading east. Man I can't wait till I retire, just 15 More years.......

Good to hear, anything would be and improvement. Thought I heard the guy was from/ran Seney area.
I don't how many times I swore I would never ride trail 8 again. Lol
Great pic too!

Good to hear things are improving in Munising. There is no club sponsoring the grooming there, it was (is?)
handled by a third party/business on contract and in the past the grooming was mediocore and they were
hard on equipment. I hope the new grooming boss is the real deal!

Like the person who started the thread every time we talked there were many cocktails involved. However he was indeed a groomer in the Seney area and as I recall his name is Tom. We have stayed in Seney before Munising just due to the fact the trails there are always top notch. Tom is a **** of a nice guy and definitely knows what grooming is about. The Munising area went after him to solve their problem and from what I've heard its definitely improving.

Just got back from Munising. I frequent the area many times per season and I will say you can already tell a difference in the trails. Trail 8 was a bit choppy by days end, but I have seen it WAY worse on way less crowded weekends. Tom is the former groomer from Seney, and he is really putting his heart into fixing up this area. Him and his crew were doing a great job keeping up with weekend traffic. He had retired last year from Seney with plans to live down state again, but when he was contacted to help the Munising area, he took it on as a good challenge. Definitely on track now. We talked with him at the Buckhorn as he stopped in for a coffee on Friday night and he was passing out business cards so that people could provide feedback. Surely do appreciate the great effort!!
