I just got back from riding Munising area from Fri-Sun.
Conditions were so/so Fri morning on 7 and 419. It was high 30's, so it was mashed potato snow.
Huge moguls on 8E of 419 to Shingleton. We stopped at Bear's Den around 3. A lot of people reporting terrible conditions from there up to Grand Marais. We did not go any further North.
It was not unexpected due to the warm temps all week. I was just happy to find snow! It's been hard fought mileage this year. Between early season conditions and lots of traffic due to limited snowfall.
We took SM-41 south and took the loop around to Buckhorn. I figured the southern section of that loop would get pretty thin. And it did! Carbides and hyfax are replaceable...
We were riding dirt on some sections of that trail. There were puddles, so that helped cooling. We did help clear some trees off the trail.
Friday night's snow helped out, but with no groom it didn't really matter. We decided to head east towards Marquette. Figured it was thinner snow due to melting during the week, but figured less bumps. That was true! Pick your poison: thin snow with smaller moguls, or more snow with bigger moguls. We turned around at Lakenenland with it getting thinner towards Harvey. West of Marquette did receive 10", but we didn't proceed west.
I had my 5 year old riding on the 2 up seat, so I did have to slow down on the moguls.
It seemed everyone we talked to was just trying to find smooth trails. We did meet the groomer on 7/8 on Saturday afternoon. That was good to see. We ended up running forest roads the remainder of the day.
We woke up Sunday and put a quick 80 miles on. Beautiful groomed conditions that saved the weekend! 10/10 conditions. I see a little warm Monday and Tuesday, but freezing temps at night. Colder the rest of the week. There should be some good riding this week!
