New Garage ...How Big?

Make sure however big you build it, that there is room for the beer frig! I have a larger 3 stall but my vehicles stay outside. So does my pontoon boat and fishing boat. But there's absolutely without a doubt room for the beer frig and work shop.

Yah, see...all these guys like dogs pulling at the end of the leash when it comes to garages....give the dog a longer leash he will still be at the end of it.

Garages are the same way...BUT

I say, DON'T DO IT! What happens; you build it and it fills with expensive stuff. You build it bigger and it fills with even more expensive stuff. And don't forget about that worthless brother-in-law who wants to sponge on your to store his whatever....just for "a few months".

Now you find that most the time you spend $10 per foot on building materials to store the stuff, and in the end, you spend $100 per foot filling it!

So now you're broke all the time...wife complains she doesn't have any money, and you have all those toys out there just wasting space.

So do yourself a favor....go buy a nice tarp for that car and use it. Then take all that money you would have spent on building the garage, and all the extra taxes you will pay over the years because your property taxes just went up, and all the extra utility bills and heat bills and maint. bills, and stick that money in the bank, or invest it....then instead of gett'n to 70 and figuring you only have 20 more years to work before retirement....back up and retire at 60, and then go buy all those toys you would have had to buy on time payments, rent some storage area and live the life ALL THESE OTHER GUYS WANT TO LIVE....and have lots of cash to live it.

Garages are land yachts that you throw money into and never get back.

Another plan....sneaky, but it works!

Drive around in the suburbs til you find some guy with two HUGE storage buildings....then go up to the door and offer to mow his lawn for free, then in the fall rake his leaves for free, then one day when you bring him a beer so he isn't thirsty watching you do all the work around his place, casually mention that you are envious of his big storage facilities and that someday you might like to build something to store your ^%$&^*& car, sleds, bikes...etc in it.

Naturally you say that right now, they are sitt'n outside for lack of storage area and rusting away.

This is where you stop and pause for at least 5 minutes saying ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...eventually the guy will HAVE to break silence and offer up his buildings for your "short term" storage. Of course over time, you will have MORE things in those buildings than he does and you hire someone else to mow his lawn, and rake his leaves.

This one works like a symphony orchastra...shameful, but functional.

Why wait until your 60 to build a shed and buy toys to enjoy. Build it now, buy toys now, enjoy life now. No one is guaranteed tomorrow. Do it now and enjoy.

Live today like it's your last. I had a friend who was killed in a snowmobile accident in Feb 06 and on his table he had a list of how his day was planned. That saying was listed at the bottom. Will never forget it for as long as I live as it is so true.

I have built two garages in my life. The first one was 24' wide and 38' deep. The second was 28' deep and 35' wide. I used the first one to store my boat in the back of one side and had a work shop in the back on the other side. This left plenty of room in front to park the cars. I built the second one wide because of the way my lot was. I would without a dought build my next garage deep instead of wide. It worked MUCH better for working on cars, sleds, bikes, etc......

How big

my hubby's formula is measure the house then double that size and you'll be happy, because it will not only house your prizes, but all the over flow usually ends up in there!

If you can built tall enough for a second floor, do it. We wanted a second floor but our height restriction would not allow it. We needed just another 2 1/2 feet and we would of doubled 2500 sq ft. Instead, we allowed for a crawl space about 5 1/2 ft tall on top of a separate room with stairs going up and it added a ton of storage for whatever you need it for. Our plan was to put a party room on the second floor with a kitchen, bathroom etc but the township said NO. :(
