New Track Options

I think i'm going to go with a new track, i figure it's like a set of tires, when they go bad you need to replace them. money makes sense to me. i got a 99 xc 700. i'm changing the gear ratio from 1.67 to 1.71. so it'll take off a lil faster. i ride 80% on trail and 20% offtrail. I'm looking for something that will hook up good on the trail and still hook up good in the powder. i want something that will last me a while, not something with thin chinsy lugs. i'm looking for around 1.25 i dont' really wanna go bigger but i could sacrifice and go with a 1 in. lug. the best deals i've found are at my local dealer, kens sports, and tracks usa. these are some track options i've found: 1 in. hacksaw; 1 in. predator; 1 in. cone; 1 in. carve; 1.25 in. predator; 1.25 in. ripsaw; 1.352 cobra; 1.375 paddle

most of these tracks are $350 or under. i would love the 1.375 paddle track, it's only $360 but idk if it's going to fit. i'm really leaning towards the 1.25 predator. fully clipped for only $330 i believe on tracks usa.

love to hear your opinions

My brother has 09 MXZ 800R with a 1" lug track and I have 06 Fusion with a 1.25" track and mine feels like it will never get stuck. I've rode the MXZ plenty of times and you could completely tell the difference. It just doesn't have the traction you would like. Go with, at the minimum a 1.25" lug ripsaw. You stated that 80% of the time you ride on the trail, by going by that percentage I would invest in a ripsaw or the cobra 1.352". You will get plenty of traction on and off the trail with those and be satisfied.

you all think i have enough room in the tunnel and up front by the heat exchanger to do so? i'd like to hear of someone with an xtra-10 that has done so. for $360 a 1.375 is awful tempting. i do ride in pretty poor snow conditions sometimes keep in mind. the 1.375 is only $10 more than the ripsaw and $30-40 more than the predator. the cobra i like but i just don't know how the lugs will hold up with all the road crossing/riding i have to do.

even over the predator? idk y but i guess i'm not a fan of the ripsaw, i like to be different

On that sled you would have to notch the track based on how long of a paddle your going to run. Once you get past about 1.5 your gonna want to notch the track, and anything bigger than a 2'' is gonna require a set of smaller drivers or a drop and rolled chain case or both. Do you have drop brackets on your tunnel for your rear skid? If not look for longer drop brackets or reposition your old ones further down your tunnel if you have room.

I put a ripsaw on my last sled (edge xc500) and loved it. Wish I had one on my Fusion. I don't much about the other tracks.

I bought it from tracks usa. They were great to work with and are very knowledgable about the various tracks. I would call them and get their opinion. I wish all businesses were like that.

does tracks usa have free shipping? i can get a ripsaw at kens for $350 without having to mess with ordering and shipping

The cobra works better off trail, but since you you are 80% on trail, I would go with the 1.25 ripsaw.

Good choice for the type of riding you do. You will love that track! Are you going to stud it? :) Sorry, I couldn't resist.

the only thing i will ever stud is pedal bike tires. if anyone needs a ski put on and their rear tire studded on their pedal bike i'll do it for money lol. i just finished putting a motor on that bike 20 min. ago but i put a non studded tire back on it and i took the ski off since the snow go buh bye

Could be numerous factors came into play that contributed to your dilemma. Age, fatigue, installation, ect.... And as always there is " bad luck " ( aka Murphey's Law ) maybe you just missed seeing there was a potential problem with your track & studs then didn't catch it ? I wouldn't give up on studs ( IMO ) There are pros & cons to the stud-no stud debate which I don't care to get into. The 1st pic is my daughter's reponse when she heard that ( indy_500 ) you were not going to run studs ! ( LOL ) The 2nd pic is some dbl backers that I have used in several sleds . They are 15 years old and when I install new studs in that track I will use them again. Those backers have at least 13k-14k on them. The pic in the previous post is another worthy option I have discovered. They are a mix of Phantom studs ( backers anodized gold ) and the Woody's Grand masters. Both have big heads and big backers. They are designed for the single ply tracks but had held up so well for 5300+ miles that I installed them in my new ( double ply 1.250 ripsaw ) The single ply track broke at the reinforcement rods and proceeded to fail. I rode 60 miles back to camp with the track missing 15" of the outer band and torn right up to the edge of the stud backers without loosing " 1 " . I thought that was impressive , especially since we beat the living crap out of those studs & track. At least this gives you some options should you re-consider your STUD / NO STUD rule ! Personally.... I would choose to be a STUD. (LOL)
