All the comments are making me feel more confident in my choice. I'm a little curious about some of the things i've never heard of such as DEFF fluid and glow plugs. What are those and what has to be done with them?

MRBB, you are right my dealer said resale on 3/4 ton diesel are VERY good.

DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) has to be added to its tank for emissions reductions. Things like glow plugs, injectors, etc are parts in the motor that will require maintenance as your mileage climbs and they are pricey, also any breakdowns with the motor will be much more expensive than their gas counterpart. Also your oil changes will require ~10 quarts of oil, your fuel will be more expensive, adding anti gel stuff in the winter etc.

So yeah diesel resale value is better than a comparable gasser, but with the added initial purchase price and the more expensive cost of ownership its really a wash. Where a diesel pays off is if you tow heavy and tow often.

If ur not planning on doing maintance ur self like oil changes and stuff be prepared for the cost. My powerstroke is 100 for a oil change that I do my self with synthetic rotella and oem filters, gas would be with mobile 1 35 bucks. And if ur not intrested in doing repaires if something needs it don't own a diesel without Warrenty on it cus it can get expensive fast. My brother complains about paying corvette tax cus everything he takes it in for they charge more he says than normal car/truck. I told him I would love to pay his price vs a diesel mechanic but I do it all myself and don't trust stealerships but that's me and I'm pretty good with a wrench ( atleast better than average bear lol) but resale will be there compaired to gas for sure

I can say I don't tow often (every day) but usually if we need my truck for work or fun I'm pulling the trailer (only diesel in family) but I can say I wouldn't be without a diesel unless has was 1buck a gallon and diesel was 6 lol

dfattack, I have both and will give my humble opinion on what I've found. f250 diesel, 1500 z71 lots of trips fron Ann Arbor to the UP, about 200,000 miles! f250 diesel is a work horse, never has it let me down, always makes it to the other side of the bridge on 28 gal of fuel, I don't want to say this for the bashing but I run about 80 all the way. have the same trailer and I stay on top of the trailer brakes, they are important for safe travel. the negatives to diesel are, cost more for the truck, diesel fuel for the last 7yrs has been about 1$ more per gal (not right now) oil change is 110$ in A2 (15 qts oil) and you have to be careful where you by your fuel, stick to stations along the eway, mom and pop stations may not sell a whole lot and water is a major problem! 250 ride is definetly rougher than 1500! one hill out of Gaylord that's about 5 miles long is the only place this truck downshifts to 3rd from drive! now for the gas,its like a caddy! Down shifts more, but I can live with that, gas is cheaper. what it boils down to is how many trips will you make a year pulling trailer? I have dropped to 4or 5 trips per year now and I can't warrant the added cost for owning a diesel anymore! Like I said, brakes on the trailer help to defeat all that weight behind you, keeps you in control of the trailer and not the other way around MHO

i own a 2015 ford f-350 6.7 have not pulled much with it 4500 miles it replaced a 2011 f-250 6.7 awesome truck good on fuel great ride for a 3/4 ton, bought the 1 ton because i pull a 2014 big country 40' camper and a 30' goosneck, i also own a 2002 duramax 2500 another great truck but i put 2.5 torsion keys in the front for the v plow and 2" rear block along with heavy duty rear springs to pull camper and goosneck rides really rough now bought the 1 ton because d max is getting old 6 weeks ago i bought a 2015 dodge eco diesel 1/2 ton to drive for work and replace the old dmax for pulling my 25' snowmobile trailer 4 place inline i put a 2.5 leveling kit in the front and air ride air bags in the rear with the trailer empty or full have plenty of power but the wind throws me around alot and a little sway reason being is the light ply tire on the 1/2 did not feel safe so i will pull the sled trailer with the d max or the 1 ton i have had great luck with my fords and my d maxs i have a friend that has a 2015 dmax right now with 8000 miles he is not happy with the power or fuel mileage at all ready to get rid of it my nephew has a 2015 dmax and is happy about 8000 miles also for what you are going to do buy the dmax 3/4 way more resale and you won't beat it to death pulling anything. just my 2 cents also had a dodge diesel great truck but bad front end and bbaddd trany i think the dmax denali is a great choice i almost bought 1 when i bought the ford it was a tough decision but i ended with the ford and i am very happy. if you get the denali i want a update pro's and cons

I'll add this, as for resale, YES a diesel will, ALWAYS bring MORE, but they COST a LOT more up front, so its really a balance act of sorts to me
advantage of diesle is the MOTOR is good for a LOT more miles, it works half as hard and at hal;f or less the RPM"S a gas does, so again, its basic math!
the rest of the truck in area's they use road salt??
GOOD Luck getting LONG life out of tyhe body on your truck, so even with the Motor being able to live for 300K, your body might be lONG time dead after about 15 yrs(My 06 I traded in on this 16 was well cared for washed and rinsed as often as possible to get salt off and, it rusted out from BETWEEN the paint and the surfaces with NO paint gone on either side??

Trans and rear ends and U joints and other things, DON"T care if the motor is diesel or not they wear and tear from DAY one Minute one of use

NOW as for DEF fluid use

I am using exactly 2.5 gallon's every 2500 miles
its about 10 bucks in costs
NOT huge, but it can add up if you add that to cost of per gallon

NEXT is FUEL filters, something NO one really mentioned
they need to be replaced every 10k or so, bad fuel, sooner,
NOW if you AGAIN< do ALL your OWN basic repairs and maintenance, things are better
BUT MY local DODGE dealer quoted me on changing OIL, filter and fuel filters , at 500 bucks
can be done every 15k
SO< that isn't cheap at ALL
NOW< My old like truck got average 10 mph for me
new Diesel of LIKE truck, gets me average of 17 mpg
that;s ALMOST twice as far on a gallon of fuel
NOW TOWING< Old truck got me like 8-9 with about 6k behind on a 500 mile trip thru Mt's UP and DOWN's all the time, pulling 5k on RPM"S to get over them or MORE and dropping speeds in the process ON some 5-6 mile climbs I swear I could see the gas gauge moving south on me at 5500 rpm and g running into hill at 75 and be at 60 at the top IF that! screaming for mercy the whole way! LOL

NOW a diesel SHOULD get still about 15 Mpg towing same load same trip and NOT drop the speeds on the hills, or HAVE to scream the piss out of your motor to get up and over them, barely break a sweat with JUST 6 k behind you
SO< again a diesel shows it BEST benefits when towing, and the costs savings are ONLY really when towing at MOST Gains, that is

saving you travel time by NOT slowing down on hills and better mpgs as well, and NOT beating your motor up to make it any where!

CAN you actually SAVE money owning a diesel??
I say for 99% of people NO

will you be happier while drive it with a load behind you, YES
will getting better MPG's make you happy
YES
but again, you ain't saving MONEY unless you keep it for 20 yrs and 300 ,000 miles then MAYBE
But if your like MOST folks these days
trade in on a NEWER truck every so often or once miles get up there
the gains you will get on trade in, you paid on buying the truck already
you AIN"T gaining anything IMO
I am very HAPPY with my 2016 Ram 2500 diesel, but in NO way SHAPE or form did I buy it thinking it was going to Save me money, from up front costs to long term
I paid more and always will
diesel cost more and ALWAYS WILL, as its mostly a commercial fuel, and they know companys NEED it!

more oil to do oil changes , more filters to change, DEF fluid NOW< and SO on
My 2016 diesel rides as well as my 2006 gasser, MAYBE better SLIGHTLY
gasser was about 7500 lbs empty, diesel is at 8250 lbs on a scale for both!
BOTH stopped well, diesel MIGHT need a little more room, as its heavier, so expected, and I can feel the weight in turns over the gasser
BOTH stop better TOWING than any HALF ton I towed with however!
and BOTH pulled better as well, weight IS your friend when towing, and SO is Torque LOL

My dealer gave me a 1 ton Denali HD (3500) to test drive. Should there be a big difference in ride from a 3/4 to a 1 ton? I realize there are more or stiffer rear leaf springs on the 1 ton, but I didn't know if that would translate to a noticeable difference in ride.

I went from a Ram 2500 to a Ram 3500 this past spring, and the 1 ton SRW definitely has a harsher ride.

I really liked the Chevy/GMC when I test drove it...but they couldn't find me one in a color to match my boat, lol.

Only way I would own a modern diesel is if you trade before warranty is up. I know a ton of people that own GM 6.0 gas, They have been great engines. You can replace the whole engine for the cost of some of the injection system repairs on these oil burners.

Update:

Ordered the 3/4 ton Duramax Denali HD today. My dealer gave me a brand new 3/4 ton Duramax to drive for a couple of days and I think that was the right match for me and how I'm going to use it.

Thank you all for your input and advice. It was much appreciated.

One other thing to consider is out a weight distribution hitch on it. I have a 28ft neo that finished off and added weight. Primarily tow with 2014 f-150 with 5.0.
Truck tows and accelerates fine and brakes fine with electric brakes. We did notice a tremendous difference with and with out the weight distribution hitch.

We were thinking about getting a weight distribution hitch for a 7 x 23 ft legend that we tow with 1/2 ton tahoes and around town at least, a newer 4 runner. Can you point me in the right direction for info on one? I don't know much about them.

Correction. It was an equalizer set up

I had a local trailer company by me do it. I believe they used a combination of blue ox and curt to make it work. We do not have the chain set up which makes it really nice. I will be heading up this weekend and can shoot a photo of it all attached and hooked up. I know it needed some custom fab work to make it work with the v-nose of our trailers and the front ramp.

Before we had it anything over 67-68 mph she would like to move the truck loaded. Now I can run 72-73 with no problems. Very impressed how it turned out.

I am currently using the draw Tite weight distributing hitch with trunnion bars. The tongue weight on my current tow vehicle would have been too heavy without the WDH. I will use the same setup and thanks for the advice.
