My family and I were up around Calumet this past weekend looking at colors and I saw people working on the Northgate Motel. I am now curious if someone bought it and will be opening it back up or what?

I don't think it will be a motel again. The bank I work for had it and sold it recently.. I'm not 100% sure but I thought it was going to be revamped and turned into apartments.

I actually heard it was going to be opened as a motel again and they were shooting for a re-opening of mid October. They have been working like dogs for the past 2-3 months on it. Pretty much gutted the entire place. All new windows, doors, flooring, beds, furniture...Painted the metal roof, tuck pointed the brick, pulled out the ugly and overgrown arbor vitae bushes in front, probably a lot more I do not know about, but drive by it almost every day.

The new owners are advertisers on this site, but I do not want to say who it is just yet. Will wait to see what they do with it.

I hope they reopen and hopefully keep the costs down on the rooms. All I need is a place to sleep, nothing fancy like in downtown Houghton or Hancock. It looked nice and redone from the road thats why I noticed it going by.

I guess JD would know if they are advertisers. I sure hope it works out for the new owners.

A ton of work is being done for sure.

I don't know for sure. I had first heard the rumor that it was going to be an apartment type place, but then from a pretty credible source that it was going to be a motel. However, I did not hear that from the owners themselves, so it could very well be slated to be an apartment type setup.

Either way, it was good to see it finally picked up and is great to see it getting fixed up so nice. It sure went down hill big time with the last owner.

The last time I stayed there it didn't even have heat!! You got a couple tiny ceramic/electric heaters from the front desk when you checked in-LOL. And they were charging like $70 a night!! Needless to say, we didn't frequent that establishment much.

I guess I never had it that bad when we stayed there a handfull of times. We always paid about $55/night if I recall. Our heater in the room worked great for drying your gloves, just had to watch out that you didn't get them to hot. Oh well, the place is gone now and I guess we will see what happens there.

They are still working on it and look to be pretty close (at least from my observations driving by). Initially I heard they were hoping to be open by sometime in October, but the latest I heard was by the snowmobile season.

I can also say it was confirmed to me that it will be a motel when re-opened.

Will they be put under the accomodations link for the Calumet area when they are open, John?

If they chose to advertise it, yes. They do advertise another business on the site, so I would imagine when they have it open, they will want to advertise that motel on the site too.

Ahhhh, many fond memories of the Northgate, it always had some distinct advantages to it over other hotels in the area such as :

When you arrived at the Northgate you could pretty much just throw your gear bags out of the truck into the room.

You never really had to worry about getting your stuff ripped off at the North Gate because you could park your sled a foot
form the door.

You also never had to worry about skunk in up the hallways with tow rope!!

I'm glad to see they are reopening it's great location.

It's Trailside Lodge now, as stated above. I stayed there this fall for the trail clean-up weekend. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Very nice clean rooms with ample hooks and shelf for sledding clothes. Not sure of rates. Close to food and drinks and stores.

I would most definately stay again. :)
