Ok folks, you came thru for Ontonagon voting for the playground equipment. We need you once more.

As most of you know, Smurffit Stone recently closed the paper mill here in Ontonagon, a devestating blow to the whole west yoop. Our local officials have at least 3 very interested parties for this mill, but Smurffit Stone will not cooperate. Originally, they had stated that the mill would not be sold, after a small letter writing campaign forced a special meeting with the bankruptcy court they did agree they would consider a possible sale.

Our local leaders have at least 3 VERY SERIOUS potential buyers however Smurffit has not cooperated. They will not take calls, provide property-financial info, etc. James Jessup, our prosecuting attorney, is spearheading an effort to petition the court to force them to do so.

Here is what I am asking for. In the post below there is a letter written by Jessup. Paste it (or make your own version), sign it and mail it to the address shown. You do not need to be from this area to write. This is another example of big corporate America poo-pooing small town folks, and we need everyones help.

Jessup would like to see 1000 letters on the judges desk asap. I think we can do more than that. Please pass this along, post on Facebook, whatever. He (Jessup) met with a mill that had a similar situation a few years back and was able to reopen and is quite profitable now. Jessup is a smart man and believes we have a shot.

I have contacted Foxnews to see if they would cover it. If you have any national medial contacts....the coverage would be great too.

It is one stamp, 5 minutes of time...even if it is a waste, it is small. Please, take the time.

Honorable Judge Shannon
824 North Market Street
3rd Floor
Wilmington, DE 19801

Case # 09-10235 (BLS) Chapter 11

Dear Judge Shannon,

I am writing in regards to the Smurfit –Stone Mill in Ontonagon Michigan. It was my understanding that you suggested to Smurfit that they co-operate with individuals who might be interested in purchasing the Mill properties. I have learned that various parties have approached Smurfit-Stone in an effort to obtain financial information that would allow them to make an informed decision on whether or not to make an offer to purchase the Mill and NO information has been released.
This Mill employed more than 180 individuals in the community and its closure has directly affected upwards of 400 jobs. The Mill has provided a tax base to the community and has been an integral part of this community since it first opened almost one hundred years ago. Although the Ontonagon Mill accounted for only some 2% of the revenue for the corporation it has provided a large part of the economic impact for Ontonagon County. Selling this Mill will not adversely affect the continued viability of the restructured debtor BUT, the failure to go forward with the potential sale of the mill will greatly affect the population of Ontonagon County.
This letter is to urge you to order the debtor and its officers, attorneys, and financial advisors to immediately, fully and honestly disclose necessary financial information to those parties interested in purchasing the mill properties providing any confidential protections as may be necessary. I further request you to require the debtor to sell this mill as a paper mill if a viable offer is made as its continued operation as a paper mill will not adversely affect this debtor.

Sincerely:
