Yes we had a bit of a melt down....south facing areas that are open or near roads lost snow cover...however back in the wooded areas held up well...we have an excellent ice base...riders I spoke with yesterday were surprised how good the trails were, and none regretted heading out...that being said, there are some thin areas, and some swampy areas with a bit of slush....but not much slush even on the lakes, as we just didnt have much snow on top of the ice...the biggest issue on the lakes is lube for your slides, its flat and very icy out there...non studded sleds may have issues. Btw...ice fishermen are reporting 14 inches of ice on nokomis, and the flambeau chain was being marked on friday....so the two areas where I live and work are not too bad. We definately need more snow...so we will be watching this next system closely...once again this one will start as snow, and then possibly change to rain (let's hope it doesnt)...if we get the 3 to 5, and the rain doesnt hurt it...we may have some very good trails by the weekend, as there is colder air, and a bit more snow behind this system. ...As usual...there is more snow to the north, less to the south (nearly twice the amount in lac du flambeau as in rhinelander or tomahawk)..that could change rapidly with the next snow...right now you could not ride south from tomahawk...but trails around minocqua, ldf, and mercer are very rideable... but in fair condition (as of today)...again thin spots, and a few wet areas.
Keep your fingers crossed...I'll update this tomorrow and tuesday, depending what this storm does
