Observations on 45 years

What a great thread. I started riding about 6 yrs old and was fully solo by 10 or maybe 11. I amd 40 now and have sold my sled. I started riding with my dad and I remember when he got a new 78 or 79 exciter 440 I think. all I remember it was black and when it got home the car didn't stay in the garage anymore. Then my mom got an enticer 340. I had a great childhood and my dad made sure I had a sled to ride each yr, a bunch of times pretty new ones too.

I remember them breaking down, trails horrible, rarely did we ever see a groomer. I jumped, rolled, flew, crashed, and on top of all the sports injuries, it hurts to ride. I suppose if I was a trail rider it'd be ok, but I have to climb, jump, fly, crash, etc and push it. The sport has sleds that do rock.. And who knows when my two boys are a tad older I just might again.

The sport helps you not hate snow.

A little more standing while riding over the years and your back may not be toast. But better to have a shot back then be a retard

We / I used to kneel either both knees or one. Worked quite well, but still managed to hit a few trees. And yes we stood up. Course this was on a 70 Moto Ski - my first year.

What I remember most would be after all day and into the nite of ripping thru out Hubbard Lake hills, laying in bed and my ears non stop ringing, as we didnt wear helmets.

Many clubs use poker runs as fundraising events. Participating in fundraising events does not make you guilty of SNOWMOBEERING!! or a fricken idiot for lack of another name.

And me standing up when I ride does not make me retarded, or need to be sterilized. Smell the crap I am standing in?

Still belly laughing from the leg falling off...
Back in the late 70's was riding John Deer green machines and my dad had a friend of his riding backwards on the back of his 300. Guy fell off right in front of me, sliding and spinning on the trail. I was afraid he would have hurt himself but he was laughing his tail off.

Of course beer was involved as all the snowmobile clubs were based out of bars. Back in the day you could get away with it because sleds did not go as fast, trails were generally rough, and suspension would kill you if you thought about going too fast.

Funny thing is when it happened I thought these "old farts" were nuts and should be more carefull. LOL, I am approaching how old they were and am now riding sleds where 90 mph is nothing. However alcohol is not in the game for me.

Keep the old stories coming.

Great memories and comments, grub....like your comment on how everyone still complains when the trails get washboarded up despite 14" of travel.....and then get on the forums and trash the next guys different brand suspension...LOL

My sterilized rehtarded azz has been stand up riding since 1969....I guess old habits die hard, but I just cannot sit for very long periods of time....he.ll i don't even have a lazyboy type recliner....never felt i'd use it enough ....LOL

I remember riding alot with one knee in the seat as well....I think thats how we got through the plowed fields back then :) We were tough on the equipment back then too...1000 miles and my sled was toast with the belly pan resemblin' my aluminum sleddin' hill saucer.

I recall riders would carry Flasks of their favorite to be used whenever they stopped for a break. Probably to kill the pain from constant washboard trails. My Dad had an Open Face Helmet and he smoked cigars when he rode as cigarette lighters were available on the "really nice machines". As a child I would be included in some of these rides and I recall that the group had a leader who presumably knew the way and they also had a trailer, a guy with a tool box and tow rope for those that might drop a lung or lose a ski. Here's a couple of pictures of back in the day....
