Oil question for the Cat guys (no, not one of THOSE oil threads!)

Cat-savvy guys,

My buddy just bought (used) an 06 F7 and either doesn't have the owner's manual or can't find it. I tried finding it on the Cat web site, but didn't have any success there either (it's probably there but I'm just not familiar with that site since I've never had a reason to visit). Question is this: what type of oil does this engine call for, with regards to mineral, semi-syn, or full-syn? Please and with all due respect, I'm not looking for brand recommendations. :) Not my sled, so I'll let him decide how much or little he wants to pay.

Also...on an unrelated side note....his brights are on and he can't figure out how to turn them off. Where the heck is the switch? I can't even find it.

Thanks.

Need to run full synthetic for the power valves also the high beam switch is on the brake lever push it forward, that's how it is on my 05 firecat

Are you saying the brake lever needs to be pushed, as in the opposite motion of applying the brakes?

Thanks Ez....that would have been my recommendation to him if S&S were readily available (assuming semi-syn is acceptable in this engine) but unfortunately, around these parts, it's not really convenient to get. Not my call though, he's the one who has to chase it down. :)

If he wants to clean valves and have one side of his sled all black, run APV. I run S&S or Intercepter. The sled likes both,Xfire 700. You can't beat the price of S$S,but if I run out,you can't find it in the UP.

His sled is black anyhow, doubt he'd notice the difference. :) And he's not the most mechanically-inclined dude in the world, so he'll probably pay somebody to clean his valves. As in, dealer -- sure won't be me, never worked on a Cat and besides, I've got 2 sleds of my own to look after!

I don't think you can even buy plain old APV oil anymore. Those motors were not that picky and it is long out of warranty so it doesn't matter that much what you put in for oil. It would probably run fine on Pennzoil but just go to an AC dealer and buy what they recommend. And yes the brake lever on those models was dual functional. Push ahead for dims/brights - pull back toward handlebars for normal brakes. Simple.
