It's true. Pee-wee Herman will be hitting Broadway later this year, The New York Times reports. The bow-tie clad character will get his own 6-week run this October in 'The Pee-wee Herman Show' at the Stephen Sondheim Theater.
And the man behind the man in the grey suit, Paul Reubens, couldn't be more excited. "I can hardly believe it," Reubens told the Times earlier this week. "Honestly, I've been pinching myself."
Reubens, 57, created the loveable Pee-wee Herman persona over three decades ago while performing with the Groundlings, a famous comedy troupe based out of Los Angeles. "Pee-wee was never that sweet again," he recalled. "He became snarkier right after that."
The character shot to cult status after the release of the 1985 Tim Burton-directed movie, 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure' and a Saturday morning children's show, 'Pee-wee's Playhouse' that ran from 1986 to 1990. But after an indecent exposure arrest in 1991, Reubens fell off the radar .
The actor revived his infamous character this January for a short run on a Los Angeles stage-and it was a hit. "It just came right back out like it was yesterday," Reubens revealed. The success of the show in LA grabbed the attention of producers and soon he was planning a Broadway production
