If you are planning your trip for this weekend here's how it looks (I rode some, and got reports from groomer driver's and friends who rode them).
The strange thing this year is...There is less snow to the north...more to the south...Minocqua area had 4.5 inches from Saturday's storm, Nokomis had 6" plus, south Tomahawk (Knight Owls) had 7.5"...our groomer operator reported 10-12 inches at the Taylor/Lincoln County line. So I think you will find better riding heading south and either east from Tomahawk, towards Langlade County, or South and West Towards Taylor County. Keep in mind Lincoln and Langlade remained closed over the weekend, and not only did they receive more snow in those areas..but they had no sleds ripping up the snow as it fell....AND after the clubs panned and grooming those trails, it was 17 below zero this morning....the trails I checked out were smooth flat and white..they looked awesome..Should be real good conditions for the opener down there. (Lincoln and Langlade) ...Trails took more of a beating around Lake Nokomis, swamp lake, and the Willow region, with heavy traffic over the weekend...the clubs are working to get them back into shape by this weekend...there is some snirt on the rail road grade, and on the heavily traveled trails...watch for some ice in the corners as well....a little fresh snow would definitely help those areas...same goes for the Minocqua/Lake Tom area...lots of thin spots and snirt especially in town...again it's strange to see more snow in the southern part of Oneida, and Northern Lincoln than up by Minocqua...but that's what it is right now.

I have some buddies running out towards Pier Willow, and up to Lac du Flambeau today...they pre scouted it this morning and said it looked really good that direction last night...said trails were thin near Little Rice, and the east side of the willow flowage, but got better back in the wooded areas

Had another groomer driver update me with Conditions in southern Price County (near Catawba)....says it's thin and fair at best...the further north you head in price county the better it will be (except in, and around towns)

* also south towards Lincoln County, and Taylor County you will see more snow

I ran south of Tomahawk to Irma, and back up to Lake Alice...then back up to Nokomis this evening...really mixed bag...definitely early season conditions..some thin areas, some snirt, and some rough areas (swamps and ditches)...over all not bad...16 W was freshly groomed and I was the first tracks on it tonight..that was sweet....becareful on the lakes...plenty of ice and snow..but lots of drifts, and ruts from ice fishermen...Alice and mohawksin are rougher than nokomis.....Harrison hills has some rocky areas...gonna take time to get that packed in...the good news is it's lightly snowing tonight...could see an inch or snow...and they have upgraded Friday into Saturday...now saying 3 to 5 inches...that will definitely improve the rough areas...one more note..the railroad grade is beat and snirty..gonna need more snow to get it back into shape...there is snow on it..but lots of rock...use it to get from point a to point b..but plan alternate routes if you can

I would think with more counties opening up and more snow around the states. The Vilas and UP should improve because there will be less traffic, right? People can now go to other places?

Thanks for the report! We'll be up tomorrow morning.
My little guy hasn't been out, so he's pumped!

Good to see other areas starting to open up. Normally it would ease traffic up, but it's still the weekend, and for a lot of people, they probably just haven't been out yet this year. Older iron, locals, families, etc.... The clock is ticking on winter....

Yes...I had 4 plus at my house...it's fluff...but very welcome...unfortunately it's a 3 day weekend...so everybody and their uncle are here, and have been blasting the trails....it was a constant buzz of machines past mid night last night, so they were blowing the snow off the trail as it fell last night...gonna go check the trails out later, and see how much it helped..but again very heavy traffic, and pretty dry fluff type of snow

Im gonna rant a little bit here...Just took a short spin around on the trails..in and around lake nokomis...they are tore up..snirt, ice, rocks...they basically blew the base right off..the new snow did little to reset the trails...heavy traffic last night while it was snowing, ruined it.....you can see where idiots have spun their tracks through the corners, and blew the snow into the woods......as i sit on my deck I can hear morons with cans running the wooded trail near my house (and there have been many this weekend)... Smh....i could go on and on...but why waste my breath...the bottomline is the trails are smoked, the little base we had is gone...the clubs will try to get them back into shape by mid week...but we are going to need a big snowstorm with wet heavy snow to get a base back..and hope it hits mid week..not on a Friday or Saturday like the last two systems...because the knuckleheads will just blow it off the trail as it's falling...really starting to see that we have a large number of morons that own snowmobiles, who don't have common sense or logic...after putting in so many years in volunteering for the clubs up here..I think I'm done after this year...its too disheartening to see all this hard work flushed by ignorance..and that doesnt even include the crazy politics currently involving oneida county and the snowmobile clubs..
.truthfully these trails never should have opened...id like to give a few minocqua businesses a massive middle finger..but thats a hole nother can of worms i dont want to open right now...rant over...my sled is parked tfn (might be for sale)

Ya they should have never opened them, but let all the idiots ruin their equipment if they are dumb enough to ride is the way I see it down by you guys! It was basically bare ground 2 weeks ago anything south of HWY 8. Vilas is in better shape definitely with the new snow only real bad trails is anything near Sayner right now. Still snowing currently and hasn’t stopped all day❄️❄️

I was just irritated yesterday...i would say if you sit and listen out on my deck (the trail is a block away)..every other sled that goes by has a can...yes it's that many..we've failed to educate people, and they just don't care...the old cliche that "snowmobiles are loud and smelly" will never go away..it and trespassing WILL close trails..i guess they don't care...we've spent plenty of time stressing these two issues here and on other snowmobiling sites...to no avail....but what really got to me yesterday was that with the recent snow, the trails should be awesome..but they aren't, because we opened too soon..we opened with a two inch base...if we had waited just two more weeks (say open tomorrow)..the base would have been triple in depth...and would probably lasted until the end of the season (depending on weather, and using seasonal averages for February and March)...now..the base is churned up snirt, and we'd need a huge snowstorm (10 to 12 plus inches of the wet stuff)..which sucks...because there is a good 10 to 12 inches in the ditches and lakes, and its nice..I rode yesterday and had a blast....im just shocked how bad the trails were with the amount of snow we have...and we got another 1 1/2 of fluff over night...the clubs did go out over night, so we'll see what they were able to do...I was going to park my sled tfn..but there's too much snow out there, and i know legal alternate routes and local trails that I can hit to scratch that itch...so im going to go...I guess we'll see how it looks

Seems like every hobby is full of entitled idiots anymore. ATV/UTV riding in popular areas is even worse.

Attackman I still think one of the biggest problem with the trail base this year is we just haven't gotten that 6-10 really wet high moisture content snow. Vilas has more snow on the trails but the groom isn't holding like most winters. As far as cans go there is no punishment for coming up there and making all the noise you want. We went to bottoms up and there were idiots coming off the lake heading to the trail braaping there cans in Bottoms up lot. Unbelievable obviously there parents didn't give them the attention they needed when they were young so there looking for attention now. Also hard to believe how many people don't understand give a little gas at takeoff then once you are moving give it a little more throttle. I think some people just think it's cool to spin there track all day long. I met a couple of young gentlemen last night who stand and ride but I didn't see them once spin there track. I couldn't help but thank them for actually knowing how to ride and not tear up the trails. Gives me a little hope in the younger generation hats off to there parents they did something rite. Trespassing not getting any better either. Until there is a high price to pay not sure it ever will.

Unfortunately the penalty will be closed trails...and i noticed something too...the trails that got panned right away after last weeks storm held up much better than the ones that were panned a couple days later...maybe it got too cold, and the snow dried out? It seems to be lacking moisture content.
