I've got a tooth thats been starting to bother me. Called dentist n I can't get in till Monday. Tooth was filled when I was a kid. I asked dentist about just having it pulled n they mentioned doing a root canal. What would some of you do? Root canal is 7-900. Having it pulled with an x ray will run about 250. If I have it pulled, maybe they can put a fake one in? Just looking for some options n opinions. Thanks.

Root canals/ Cap or crowns aint fun, but when is a trip to the dentist fun ? I've had a few done and they have lasted 25 years but will fail and then time to pull it. Its worth the cost to have teeth you can chew with, cause once their gone, well their gone.

Depends on where it is. Also depends on what you mean by a "fake" one and if you have insurance. I had one pulled 3 years ago that had cracked so I had no choice. It was an upper on the side 4th from the back. Can't see it missing and doesn't bother me. Have talked about replacing it but then you get into bridges, implants and other things. All cost more than the root canal and some depend on how good the teeth next to it are. Some are covered by insurance, some are not. I've also had a root canal 5 years ago with no ongoing issues. Bad as it sounds, I'd probably pick the root canal. You'll spend more money to pull it and get a fake one.

Crazy man do the root canal!!!! To pull & have inplant can take 9 months or a bridge for the rest of your life nothing like the real thing + both of those options are much more expensive than a root canal. You can have a specalist do the root canal but will cost much more than dentist.

Definitely do the root canal, well worth saving what you have for as long as you can. Like cords said, once they're gone, they're gone.-Mezz

Remember the bridge destroys the teeth next to the one they are replacing with it. They grind them down. This will shorten the life.
Implants are getting pretty cheep. Look in to all options. I would avoid the bridge.

Go with root canal. Ask to be knocked out or gassed real good.
Or pull it and if it bothers u being missing, look in to the implant.

I got a bum tooth also. Just went 2 days ago. Root canal and crown is ~$2k.
Pulled and permanent implant is ~$4k.
All prices were complete and finished.
I don't remember what just pulling the tooth price was because that's not an option for me. It is also 4th from back on top. I need that tooth, that's a main chewing tooth.
Bridge or whatever that removable stuff is, is also not an option for me. Teeth aren't supposed to be removable IMO.

I have had both ways. 20yrs ago I cracked the very back upper and had it pulled, altho the crappy insurance I had at the time had a part in the decision. 3yrs ago while checking on what seemed to be a crack my dentist actually finished it off while testing it. I was about to say pull it but then he explained that we should try to save it with a root canal/crown and I freaked out, but he assured me it would not be bad and since he was a fellow sledder I could trust him, actually he got us both back into the office for regular visits which is next to impossible with the wife. So this time around I decided with the root canal and since we have great insurance this time I had to at least try. I have to admit I can't say I enjoyed it but it was not really that bad, the tough thing is having to have multiple trips and there is some time involved but the things they do now are not like the past or at least they have gotten better at it.

Imagine that beer had to be chewed, and that tooth was the only tooth that could chew it, and then make your decision. That's what I would do.:)

You should fix it if it can be fixed. All the options that come after tooth loss have consequences. None of this is going to be cheap. I am scheduled to get a crown on Wed. It was either that or pull it. I will get the crown. I have enough holes in my head.

Root canal won't hurt shoot you up & start grinding then clean out nerve & other tissue then temp cap & good to go until crown comes in. If infected will take a little longer to heal but that is why you have the root canal to avoid infection & keep the tooth for 30 40 years unless you crack it. Hardest thing is keeping your mouth open for procedure time ask for jaw jacks makes it easier on you. Specialist has high speed drill sucks the stuff out done in minutes sends you back to the dentist for the crown but much more expensive procedure.
