From the NWS:

They received 119" of snow for the month.
I wish I knew how much Calumet got - seems like they never record it. I'm pretty sure we hit more than 119" in 2016. No idea about last month...
What a co-inky-dinky. It's not Calumet, but just last night I was reviewing John's "
Snow data as of 9AM December 31, 2017" (Season Total to Date: 129″) as shown on the
AL Cam page, vs. his
"Climatology of All Years", and based on the current 129" season total to date vs. season totals through Dec 31 for all other years, this year is on track for at least:
- the highest snowfall year since 2013-2014 — 3 years! (total for the year: 323.5")
- the 2nd highest snowfall year since 2008-2009 — 8 years! (total for the year: 232.7")
- the 3rd highest snowfall year since 1989-1990 — 27 years! (total for the year: 289.5")
- the 4th highest snowfall year since 1985-1986 — 31 years! (total for the year: 278.5")
- the 5th highest snowfall year since the all-time record year of 1978-1979 — 38 years! (total for the year: 354.1")
[Am I the only one that's noticed this?
I hope that by posting that I haven't just put a curse on this year's chance to break the all-time record!]
P.S.:
- NWS has a Co-op observer in Painesdale.
- John's 129" as of 9AM on Dec 31 (-4.5" in November = 124.5 for December) beats that 119" — with 15 hours left in 2017!
P.P.S.: John's weather station has long claimed:
"The trees behind the snow station reduce the depth in this area by about 20-25% of actual."
And with the new construction, it appears that the weather station is in an even more sheltered location, so perhaps the true snow numbers are now even greater than shown!
