McCarthy: Packers family “holding out hope” for Michael Philbin
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 9, 2012, 4:47 PM EST

We told you earlier Monday about the sad story emerging in Green Bay.

Michael Philbin, the 21-year-old son of offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, has been reported missing. Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke on the matter Monday.

McCarthy said the organization has a ”family first philosophy” and that they are “holding out hope” for Michael Philbin. It was a strange atmosphere at McCarthy’s media session. The Packers have understandably canceled their open locker room media session with players Monday.

“That was as subdued as I’ve seen Mike McCarthy at a news conference,” Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette wrote.

Joe Philbin is in Oshkosh where his son was reported missing. Divers have been searching the Fox River in Oshkosh, where police were called after an employee at a nearby company thought he heard someone fall into the ice and call for help at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Oshkosh Northwestern. A body was recovered Monday afternoon with no identification.

Michael Philbin was last seen at 2:00 a.m. Police are not connecting the two events.

We’d like to send our thoughts to Philbin and the entire Packers family during this difficult time.

I go to school here there was a lot of cops today, what I have seen personally is a lot of cops and search dogs looking for a body in and alone the river. I also know someone who works at nearby Axel tech and said early this morning before the sun thawed the ice there was a kid with just his head sticking out of the ice. I am assuming alcohol or suicide, but there were no names given or suspected here at school.

We also just lost a guy on a flowage/lake a few miles from our place over the weekend. It's too sad.

Here's the story from Associated Press.

Packers offensive coordinator Philbin's 21-year-old son found

Updated: Jan. 9, 2012 at 06:04 p.m.

Employees of the Green Bay Packers were informed Monday that the body of the 21-year-old son of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin was found in a river in Oshkosh, Wis., and identified, reports NFL Network's Albert Breer.

Authorities had been searching for Michael T. Philbin a day after he was reported missing following a night out with friends. He was last heard from around 2 a.m. Sunday and was reported missing by friends at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, according to Oshkosh Police spokesman Joseph Nichols.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy addressed the situation during his weekly news conference, saying the team has a "family first organization." McCarthy said Philbin was in Oshkosh on Monday, and that the team had contingency plans in place if Philbin couldn't be with the team this week.

"We're supporting Joe and his family the best we can, and we're holding out hope that this comes to a positive conclusion," McCarthy said before the team was notified the body was found.

Michael Philbin had traveled from his home in Ripon to Oshkosh to meet friends, Nichols said. They went out together in the campus area Saturday evening, but Philbin apparently chose to stay behind when the group decided to move on to another establishment, he said.

Philbin made a cell phone call to one of his friends at 2 a.m. but didn't say where he was, Nichols said. Philbin didn't sound as if he was under duress or suffering from any medical issues and the call ended amicably, Nichols said.

But he never returned to get his car on Sunday and never tried to contact anyone, prompting the call to police, Nichols said.

Investigators had checked video surveillance from campus-area establishments and contacted the county jail and area hospitals in hopes of locating him. Attempts to track his cell phone were unsuccessful and police in Ripon, about 20 miles away, turned up nothing when they went to his home, Nichols said.

Sheriff's deputies were looking into a report of cries for help from the Fox River, but investigators had not established any links to the Philbin disappearance, Nichols said. The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department said divers were searching for someone who apparently fell through the ice.

The disappearance comes as the Packers prepare to face the New York Giants in an NFC divisional playoff game Sunday in Green Bay and his father is a candidate for several head-coaching openings. Joe Philbin has interviewed for coaching positions with the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins.

Joe Philbin has been with the Packers since 2003 and has been the team's offensive coordinator since 2007. He interviewed for the Dolphins' vacant head coaching job last week.
