polaris clutch jerking

The clutch on my 2000 Polaris Classic Touring sled engages at around 4000 rpm and jerks when it engages. Seems almost like it is sticking. Any ideas?

I don't have the same sled but mine does it too. I've blown it out with the air compressor, and cleaned all the faces. Come to the conclusion that I need a new belt and new springs. Basically redo the clutch. I've got 3,600 miles on mine though. Just need to save up some money because I have new clue where to start this project.

Chances are that your weights, rollers and pins are bad. If they are bad enough the weights are rubbing on the spider housing and grinding out the metal. If that is the case you will need to replace the clutch.

the only way to know what is wrong is to remove the clutch and inspect it. Bushings, rollers, pins, and weights can all be bad. A complete rebuild will run you in the neighborhood of $200.

I would start with a new belt and check belt tension. You may just have too much clearance between the belt and clutch faces. Your weights could be worn out if you have a lot of miles

all good info in other replies, but the very 1st thing I would look at is the center shaft, if its rusty, it will do this, esp. if it has sat 4 awhile in a moist envirement

As dumb as it may sound, check to make sure the chain is tight, If it's streched out, it could do this too.

Easiest thing to try first is change the belt. Not exactly sure what you mean by jerking. If it is a surging feeling while moving slowly than you have a worn spot on your belt. I would wreck more belts on my 800 XCSP loading and un loading it on the 4 place trailer than actually riding it. Can you be more specific. Sticking and jerking are quite a bit different.

I'm guessing rust. I got slight rust/pitting on mine and when it goes to disengage, it clunks/clicks slightly.

I will second the suggestion to try a new belt. Had this happen to my wifes 2007 FST a few years back, I was sure something major happened to the motor the way it was jerking when the throttle was pressed and thank god all it needed was a new belt!
