I asked this question when I was rebuilding my top end and got various responses. The one guy in this post got it right. There is ony one way to put these in otherwise you will not be able to tighten the bolts without a gap.
Also if you have an older sled (mine was a 2004 switchback) that still has the cast aluminum blades do yourself a favor and spend the 70 a piece for the stainless steel ones so you don't have one break off and go into the piston like mine and others have done. I sure wish I had it would've saved me a grand in repairs.

Polaris dealer. The replacement valves are stainless steel.
As posted above, they ONLY install ONE way, unless you're using a sledge hammer to drive 'em in, you can't screw up.
that's odd, a buddy with an 02 x edge 600 said he put his in backwards and blew it up

Noway can you put in backwards. 02 edges had aluminum blades. They would break and or melt. That is why I changed my 02 800 xcsp and my 03 700 RMK over. I purely lucked out and caught the blade at the edge of breaking. They would break on the nut end and melt on the guilitine end. Poo figured it out half way into 03. This was the start of a whole long list of Poo blunders at that time along with semi sealed drive bearings ands voltage regulator problems.
Note: 2600 miles on ccurrent Poo. When't to clean valves and they look great. Some normal amber/carmel color with no build up. First time I had valves off to clean. (They were working just fine). Thank you Amsoil Interceptor. Stuck them right back in. No black gunk or plugged holes like I used to get on my switchback with POO VES oil.
I don't want to start a oil-brand bashing thread, but a well respected engine builder/machine shop in Northern Wisc will tell you that he can identify AMSOIL users by the fact that all the crank journals are "blued" due to heat.
'Nuff said.
I HAD both a 2001 EDGE-X 600 and a 2002 EDGE-X 800 at the same time.
SAME POLARIS oil in both sleds.
At the end of the season the 600 valves were clean, the 800 were ALL GUMMED UP.
Valve cleanliness is the result of several factors, not just oil type.
Believe what you want on AMSOIL, I'd never run it again.
