Polaris P-85 Primary Rattle At Idle

Hello everyone. I have a 1995 Indy 500 efi with the 488 Fuji with 3817 miles, and the clutch has developed a loud rattle at idle, and when I pull the starter rope. Once the rpm's are above 2000 the rattle goes away but then returns once back at idle again. The clutch has never been worked on. I don't have any clutch tools so I've just inspected it on the machine. All the bushings seem to be in place by the rollers; all the buttons are there and look ok, the spring and spider look okay, and the play in the weights seems typical. I ran it again for a minute with the belt off, but no change.

The only thing I noticed was that the small bolts that hold the weights in place almost look like they are too long (or the threads are too short). The nut bottoms out where the threads stop, but with the pressure off of the weights there is probably 1/16" of space between the bolt head and the clutch, but it seems that if this was the problem it would have been rattling long before now. Has anyone experienced this before or have any suggestions on what else to check? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wes

If you check around, you can probably find a brand new clutch, calibrated for exact for your sled, as cheap as the rebuilding. This is the route I took on the last 2 Poo P-85's. Tear down will tell you what to do though. That is unless you just want to rebuild what you have, but the worn parts will add up $$$ fast.

Your buttons may look fine, but they are most likely worn. If there is to much gap, and the spec is really small, it will rattle.

You need a clutch holding fixture, a spider jam nut socket, spider socket, propane torch, 3/4" breaker bar, and a cheater bar. Thats to get it apart. A "rebuild kit" from EPI is reasonable, but the 2 sockets alone will be near $100.

Its not a hard process, but it takes some muscle, the spider and jam nut should be torqued over 200lbs.

Your weight bolts are supposed to be like that, with the gap.

BTW, once you buy those tools, they will work on all P-85 clutches up to current year, and most likely on all Polaris ATV/UTV clutches as well.
